The fountain was built in 1808, well over 210 years ago. Think about that. Amazing that it still operates today, flowing with water. But back then, it was not built solely for decoration. It was part of the mission’s hydraulic system that brought water to the mission, the grounds, and lavanderia. The sign said it was built by the Franciscan Padres. I question the “building” wording especially with the Chumash natives that lived in the area. To design and to build are two different tasks.

The octagonal fountain is built in a Moorish architecture which was popular in Spain at that time. The fountain sits right in front of the mission, the mission was built in 1787. It was used for the mission inhabitants and Chumash to launder clothes. Today, the fountain still flows and water lilies are growing in it. The years have created a beautiful moss staining. It’s still a beauty.

The fountain is chained off so folks can’t get right up to it. But close enough to get selfies. There are no listed measurements, but I’m guessing the width is 15 feet and 3-4 feet deep at the base… that’s my eyeballing...

This historic structure sits in front of the Old mission & has a marker with some description. I truly love to see old structures preserved, and it adds character to the well-preserved facade of the Mission. However, it would be even nicer if it were better maintained. The fountain is at barely a trickle, has a lot of algae in it and bees have a nest in the top story. Overall, glad to see this...

You can tell that this fountain has a long history tied to the adjacent Old Mission. Elegant in its design
