This place is truly amazing! I took my kindergartner to visit the sanctuary since we are both avid animal lovers. He absolutely loved it! The info sheet we were given to read as we walked through the grounds was very helpful. My son loved learning the nicknames of the birds and each of their stories. We visited mid-afternoon and were fortunate to have the place pretty much to ourselves. We visited with a couple of the groundskeepers, both of whom were friendly and very knowledgeable. One of them, a man named Zack, entertained all of our questions about the birds behaviors and their backgrounds. The young woman at the entrance was also very kind and helpful.
It is important to me, personally, that the animals at places like SOS that I visit look happy and healthy, that the people who work there are connected with the animals. You can tell the hard-working individuals at SOS love the work they do, not only based on your interactions with them but also by the well-being of the birds. The birds seem comfortable and well-adjusted, are well-fed, their enclosures are clean and proper enrichment materials are provided for each of them.
I first visited was about 12 years ago as part of a high school field trip. Comparing that trip to what we experienced today, I am very impressed with the improvements that have been made within the facility. It is now even better than I remember. I love the addition of environmentally/bird/butterfly friendly plants throughout the facility. The facility is clean, tidy and easy to maneuver. The signs outside the enclosures make it easy to learn about the different types of birds, the information is presented in an appealing and eye-catching way. The info sheet given at entry makes meeting each of the birds more personal. I think explaining each of the birds injuries and ailments (most of which were caused by humans in some shape, way or form) makes a big impact. My son was truly inspired by the stories of the birds and learning what we can do to help keep them safe. You have a future SOS volunteer in the making!
Thank you for everything each and every one of you who work with SOS do to make a difference. Keep up the...
Read moreYesterday my husband & I visited Save Our Seabirds for the second time. We were so happy to see that this bird sanctuary was able to remain at this location even after the last Hurricanes. All these birds have a large safe living space. Each space is labeled with the type of bird living there. This is an amazing place to visit and these birds are so very fortunate that Save Our Seabirds is there to help them. Admission is free but donations are greatly appreciated and very much needed to make sure these incredible birds continue to get excellent care. Make sure you visit the gift shop. The gift shop has a book you can look at and Adopt one of the birds. Of course the bird stays at the sanctuary but for a $50 donation you receive an Adoption Certificate and a beautiful photograph of the bird you adopted. What a great idea!! We were able to visit the bird we just adopted. We are senior citizens but wouldn't it be fun for a family with young children to adopt a bird then have their child go visit that bird. Thank you Save Our Seabirds for all your...
Read moreI wanted to be able to say something good about this place. But my experience was not what I expected. My family and I found a bird completely wrapped in fishing line. We cut the line free in hopes that it be OK. It was not, we placed it on the ground it fell over a couple times, it could not fly and its tounge was severely damaged. Other wise it looked in good health. So, we drove an hour to bring this beautiful bird to what we thought was going to be a wonderful place. Only to be ignored, dismissed and told to place the bird on the ground and run after it to scare it away. The girl at the front seemed annoyed at every question. She had no knowledge as to where someone who would at least look at the bird so we could show them what condtion it was in when we found it. There is a small wooden room before you walk in to place birds outside of business hours. So not knowing what else to do we placed the bird in the box and said our goodbyes. I pray someone gave this bird the care...
