Don’s tour was amazing! We learned so much about literally everything involved, from the monuments and the families they belonged to, to the flowers and trees that surround them. I really appreciated hearing these stories with all of the details, even though some aren’t fun to hear (what with this being the south and all). My favorite part was learning about John Walz and his missing monument. His sculptures are beautiful! He also gave some pretty stellar recommendations for museum tours and restaurants to visit while we’re in town. I would recommend taking Don’s tour first so you can take his recommendations from there!

Don has a passion for the history of Savannah and Bonaventure Cemetery. He has perfected his storytelling of the local history from the perspective of individuals who lived and made the history, which made our tour very special. It’s not fluff, it’s not tall tales, it’s factual. He's serious about his information he passes on in his stories, but he does it in a fun and engaging way. He has a reading list which he makes available for anyone who wants to take a deeper dive into people and events he covers through this tour. We had a wonderful experience. I would recommend this tour to anyone. And will do it again myself.

My husband and I had the pleasure of doing a tour with Bonaventure Don a year ago and we couldn’t wait to bring our teen/young adult kids. All of us love history and Don did not disappoint. He has a down-to-earth and sometimes very funny style. We felt like we learned more history about Savannah with him than on some historic tours downtown. He really makes the people buried there “come to life” and though we aren’t usually big fans of being in cemeteries, this one is beautiful and the history is very interesting. Highly recommend.

My expectations were high, and Don exceeded them!

I conduct a historical tour across the river on Hilton head, so this was a total pleasure………, I was like the proverbial kid in a candy store!

One of the things that he said that stuck with me is basically that “this is a historical tour of Savannah Georgia told (beautifully) through the legends of the Bonaventure Cemetery”

We did an afternoon tour that started at 2:30, and was supposed to end at 4:30, but he enjoys his passion so much that we went till about 5 o’clock! As the sun was starting to get lower it really showcases the beauty of the cemetery, just amazing!

It was my wife and I and another couple from California, and at the beginning of the tour , I explained to them about what we call the “no see ums, and Shernoff about 4 o’clock they had a personal introduction to them! Good thing Don...

Outstanding. 10 out of 5 Stars.

Definitely a highlight from our trip to Savannah!

Don gave an outstanding tour with plenty of historical context woven into the stories of the folks interred at Bonaventure. Along the way, we also learned about native flora, sculpture, and the symbolism behind funerary art. (And a bunch more.)

Don is super courteous to his guests, catering to their intellectual curiosity as well as their comfort! (The 2.5 hour walking tour was conducted in 90+ degree heat, and Don provided water as well as direction to shaded areas. All in all, the heat didn't seem too oppressive, as the subject matter and presentation distracted from potential discomfort.)

Please do yourself a favor and...

We’ve attended many, many historical tours using guides over the years. This may have been the best one we’ve ever been on. We love history and Don was not only very well versed in the facts he presented but he obviously provides these tours because he loves what Bonaventure Cemetery means to the community. He encourages attendees to ‘fact check’ him on the information he provides. He even provides a listing of historical journals, periodicals, and history books for comparison. Throughout the tour, he shares information about individuals buried in the cemetery as well as tying it all together to understand the ‘big picture’ of Savannah. We highly recommend using Don...
