I went to go see This Bitter Earth after a last minute invite from a friend who knows someone involved in the production. Honestly, reading the description of the show, I wasn't all that excited. It sounded kind of exhausting. I hadn't been to any of their shows, so I really didn't go in with any expectations. The space is very small and intimate- it feels like the performers are on the other side of a large room rather than on a stage. The stage itself is small, and I was very impressed with the production quality- the set design, lighting, and sound effects were brilliant and really fun and interesting to see. They do a lot with a little. This Bitter Earth is a two-man show, and I was blown away by the excellence of the performance. This was some of, if not the best acting I have ever seen- both actors were entirely natural and expressive, and they spent almost the entirety of the show on stage, perfectly in character through a show that spans years in the lives of the characters. Every costume change was on set. Every change in setting was created purely through lighting, sound, and the actors' behavior . I very rarely either laugh or cry in response to media- this show made me do both, multiple times, and parts of it also made me cringe with discomfort. I cannot recommend this company enough, and I am so, so impressed with both the leads in this show. Both of these actors should be extremely proud, and I expect to see and hear about both again. I should also note that The Seattle Public Theater Company offers sliding scale ticketing, which is amazing, especially considering the quality...
Read moreWe visited this theater last week to see a hilarious Christmas musical called Very Diehard Christmas. This was my first time at this venue, as I’ve only been to Fifth Avenue and the Paramount before. While this is definitely a smaller, low-budget theater (the stage is tiny, and the props include children’s toys), that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. The singing and acting were just as impressive as what you’d find in larger theaters!
That said, there was one thing that caught us off guard: during the show, they shot Nerf guns and squirted water guns at the crowd. It would’ve been nice to have a heads-up about this when purchasing tickets. Luckily, we were in Row B and didn’t get hit, but the front rows (and the surrounding 180-degree area) were sprayed multiple times. Most people laughed it off, but I can see how it could be frustrating if you weren’t expecting it.
Overall, this is a super fun group of performers, and I’d definitely come back. At just $10 a ticket, it was...
Read moreA great 'intimate' theatre that gets you up close and personal to the action! Went to see 'A Very Die Hard Xmas' (Yes, Die Hard is a Christmas Movie!) and it was a blast, excellent show and definitely recommend grabbing tickets if you can next year. I have included a picture of the layout, we were seated in the second row from the front on the left of the stage as you look at it, the 1st two seats in the row just for reference. They do require masks to be worn though and the parking isn't well lit with lots of standing water (it is Seattle!) so things to consider when choosing your...
