It's a little different than your standard community center park. Firstly, it's one of the few Seattle parks that has a wading pool. It's literally just a cordoned off area where the water fills up to about a foot and kids can wade around in it. It's definitely not swimmable, nor can you dive in it, but it's good times when you have a toddler in summer. One of the main things you HAVE to have is a swim diaper for the waders. There's definitely someone "on duty" from Van Asselt Community Center who makes sure that your kids and the other kids are protected by checking to see if you have a swim diaper or not. They'll definitely say no to wading if you don't have one.
Other than that, the playground is nice. It's probably the only playground in Seattle that I know of that has turf for the main play area. It's cleaner than bark, but you definitely need to watch yourself because depending on what you wear you'll definitely pick up the static from walking/running on the turf and shock yourself on the metal play equipment, or even shock your kid!
The only reason I docked it a star is because there are times when the local teenagers come and mess around in the parking lot or the basketball court. I don't mind it as much, but there were a few times they can get rowdy and loud with the swear words and pushing around. I've never seen it escalate to a point where I didn't feel safe, but I have left on occasion so my kids didn't copy their behavior.
All in all, the playground is great with lots of locals always...

They have slides, swings, and a seesaw. During the summer, you can play in the wading pool. There's a basketball court nearby, and also a shelter with picnic tables. There's a large grass area too for anyone wanting to picnic on a blanket. The bathroom is very close by attached to the back of the Van Asselt...
