This was a stop on a cross country drive. A little-known memorial it was very unique. Because they couldn't bring the actual battleship they build a cement outline of the ship and brought various items from the ship deck to display within the cement outline. At the center is a wonderful museum filled with photos, artifacts, videos and some items to buy. But best of all it is staffed with a knowledgeable volunteer who genuinely cares about the exhibit.
This is located in a beautiful park and because it's low-profile it's easy to miss. We bought sandwiches and had a picnic before we explored the "ship". We missed it, but it does have it's own private parking lot located right outside the museum. You have to be going the right way on the main street to enter.
I was skeptical of this, but had wanted to stop at "different" things on our trip. It was a quick stop, but well worth it. What a great tribute...
Read moreIt was really nice to finally be able to visit the USS South Dakota Memorial. It's a shame that the ship itself could not have been saved. But I guess the memorial with portions of the ship and artifacts is the next best thing. I love the way they laid things out like they were still on the ship. It was nice walking around and seeing those portions. Some of them are probably the best choices as transporting a lot of those parts had to be very difficult. The inside section of the museum was very well done. They do have a small gift shop section. I wish I would have had more time to read, look closer and reflect on this ship and the men who served on her. It's a great place to visit and hopefully learn. I recommend visiting if you have the...
Read moreVery Cool Experience. We were passing through from the Badlands to the Black Hills and drove by and had to stop. Awesome idea to give you the feel of standing on the deck, seeing the breach of a 16" gun that fires shells the weight of cards. Touching the 31,000 lb anchor. I am a huge fan of Mighty Mo (BB-63) and Big Whisky (BB-64), but if you dont stop and take an amazing hour of your life to learn the story of Battleship X, you are missing some serious history.
The outside exhibits will take you about 45-90 minutes if you real all the information, walk the ship, ... We did not go inside as they were closed, but there is plenty to see even when...
