I was very glad to find several vendors that take EBT, so that fresh produce can be purchased through that program.. The vendors are friendly and will discuss how they grow their crops. Although I give good marks for some of the vendors, I was not pleased to see some vendors that are not producers and are involved in buying and reselling produce. If these vendors were reselling produce that is local, I would not have a concern. Beware that these vendors are not getting their product locally, but even from other countries. This gives them an unfair price advantage, as well as the quality is much degraded. I derive my living from agriculture and believe that to allow this practice at a local farmers market is improper. When I first went to the market to survey if the environment would be conducive to local produce sales, I approached the market management with several questions. I asked if the market was a producers only market and why they did not have a market wide network for EBT users. These questions were met with outright hostility and contempt. The management even became somewhat aggressive when the issues were pressed home. Some vendors even told me that the management is just that way and do not like to questioned on these subjects. So if you are a local producer, beware of this market and the unfair competition that the market allows and even encourages along with the hostile attitude from those who run it. Local producers and EBT users need to band together on these issues. The market appears not to care about local producers and those who rely on EBT for a helping hand. So if you are a supporter of "buy local" ask where the produce is grown, if they accept EBT( why not, if they don't) and purchase only from vendors who are sellers of only local grown (not some, but all their produce) and let your feelings on this be known to vendors...
Read moreFive Stars for South Bend Farmers Market Cafe: A Pancake Revelation!
The South Bend Farmers Market Cafe has completely redefined breakfast for me. Today, I ventured into their delightful atmosphere and opted for the Bacon Cherry Pancake with jalapeno maple syrup. Let me tell you, it was an absolute revelation!
The pancake itself was fluffy and perfectly golden brown, with just the right amount of chew. The addition of juicy cherries throughout the batter offered a delightful burst of sweetness in every bite. But the real star of the show was the jalapeno maple syrup. The sweet maple flavor was perfectly balanced by a subtle, smoky heat from the jalapeno, creating a truly unique and addictive taste sensation. The savory bacon crumbles on top tied everything together beautifully, adding a touch of salty richness.
This dish was a symphony of flavors and textures that left me wanting more. It's clear the cafe uses fresh, high-quality ingredients, and the creativity in the jalapeno maple syrup is simply inspired. If you're looking for a breakfast that's both delicious and unexpected, this is an absolute must-try! Don't forget to thank the amazing staff - they were friendly and attentive, making the whole experience even more enjoyable (especially Isabel!).
In short, the South Bend Farmers Market Cafe gets five stars across the board. Fantastic food, friendly service, and a unique twist on a classic breakfast dish - what more could...
Read moreI absolutely LOVE the south bend farmers market. Visit almost every Saturday. Never left a review before because I just assumed everyone loves this south bend local favorite spot. HOWEVER the south bend farmers market CAFE has gone completely down hill. Cannot express how bad the service and wait has gotten over the last few years. The food has almost always been good in the past, the wait staff have always been pleasant, and the service was quick and efficient . Today I went in with my mom and we ordered 2 BLT’s, since the waitress let us know they weren’t doing breakfast due to the fact they were unstaffed—which we understood. We waited 30 minutes for our food, which never came. Our waitress didn’t seem interested in figuring out what the issue was. She just started yelling at the kitchen staff and marching around talking to other customers about the issues. Never once coming over to us expressing any of empathy to the wait. After the waitress and staff started yelling at each other we just got up and left. I leave honest reviews about my experiences. I do not leave them out of spite or anger. My family has had multiple wait issues and service issues with the south bend cafe in the last year or so. We have all decided we might be done with our previously favorite Saturday breakfast spot....
