What an adorable museum! The Railroad Historical Museum was a must-see in Springfield for any railroad enthusiasts or train aficionados. I love trains--and since my husband loves me, he tagged along. Since it is only open from 2-4 p.m. on Saturdays (it relies on donations and volunteers), it is something you'll likely need to plan in advance. Parking is a bit weird to find, but head for the giant locomotive you can see by the street. Part of the museum allows you to walk through real train cars, set up with photos, news articles, models, dioramas, and real passenger train supplies. You can also ring the train bell and toot a horn (fun for kids and big kids alike!). There is also an exact replica of a little station you can walk through with more things to see. All volunteers were super nice and answered all the nerdiest questions I had with the utmost of patience. I felt no pressure to buy things or donate (in fact, I think it would benefit them to make the donation box a bit bigger and more noticeable; they truly deserve it). Lovely people, lovely place. If I lived in the area I would consider volunteering myself. Highly recommended!

We had my sons 7th birthday party here today, it was great!!! The kids LOVED looking @ all the stuff they have out, going up & down the stairs in the 2nd to last car, playing w all the knobs, etc in the locomotive, blowing the whistle, & more! Thank you so much for a great experience & a birthday party to remember!!! The fact that it's air conditioned made it all that much better in todays heat! Thanks again!

As someone who travels to a lot of rail museums, I can very much say this is one of my favourite out of the hundreds of museums I've been to. Hundreds of unique preserved artefacts of railroad history, all lovingly cared for by a friendly & knowledgeable team of volunteers, definitely worth a visit & I'll be returning time & again

My son had his 2nd birthday at the Railroad Historical Museum and it was one of the most memorable experiences ever. The volunteers were so friendly and knowledgeable. There was a lot to see and cars to explore. The kids at the birthday party loved ringing the bell (perhaps a little too much) and sitting in the engine pretending to drive it. It is obvious that those who volunteer here are passionate about trains and even participated in some of the activities we had planned for my son's birthday party. We asked them if they wanted to join us, and several did, making my son's special day even better. The volunteers were decked out in engineer hats and overalls and my son was fascinated by it all. I would definitely recommend having a birthday party there if you have a train-enthusiast. The hours are kind of odd, but we were able to schedule a one-of-a-kind party, and it was...
