I was not expecting much from a little museum in Stockton, but I was so, so wrong. This place is great! There's a docent there that is also a lawyer who knows quite possibly everything you'd ever need to know about art or the Haggin family. We spent most of our time being led around the fire art area by this man, and he explained colors, angles in the paintings drawing the eye in, identifying what is the most important thing in a work of art, and so much more. He knew about the paintings, the statues, the stories behind some of the artists, tricks artists use to draw your eye in - he was great. He and I talked about art museums in Paris passionately, Monet's house, all sorts of things. I felt very cosmopolitan. He was better than one of those audio guides you can rent at the Louvre. I really appreciated hearing his excitement over the paintings.
They also have an interesting display of a trunk that murderess Emma LeDoux put her husband's dead body in after she killed him in 1906. She was planning to ship this whole thing from San Francisco to Stockton, but she forgot to put a destination tag on the trunk and it sat at the train station until it started stinking. It doesn't stink anymore, but still looks to have blood stains on it. The trunk is pretty small, so we had to stand there looking at it to figure out how you'd fit a whole man in there. 10/10. Great museum with an...
Read moreThis museum is a trap. Before you realize the exhibits are lacking you have already paid an entry fee. They bombard you with racist mannequins that show the "Original Peoples of the San Joaquin Delta". One would think over the years you would pull this exhibit and create something more educational and realistic. There is an extreme lack of parking at the museum. Close parking is reserved for Museum staff and donors. The rest of us have to brave Victory Park after parking on the street. The collection is full of work with questionable provenance. The Gauguin is highly fraudulent and makes the rest of the collection suspect. If you are a senior citizen in Stockton please do not let them convince you fit them into your will. This Museum is undeserving of support and needs to better serve the community by removing the racist exhibits and weeding out the frauds in...
Read moreI came here with my family and the lady at the front was acting so odd. I went upstairs and the workers started to follow me and my family?? Everywhere we went they also went like we were going to steal something. I only came for one photo for my project, my teacher explained it with a piece of paper and I told the lady at the front about it and she said that I needed to have my own art work up there to go inside. It’s so ridiculous because it says I can go in for free and I had to take a picture with my classmates art work. This place is terrible, I came here last year and the workers started to follow us and made it so obvious they did. They were acting like they were looking at the paintings and stuff but it was SO OBVIOUS they were following us the whole time. I love this museum but the people that work here need to...
