Discover the Historic Stonington Lighthouse in Connecticut! Nestled at the entrance of Stonington Harbor, the Stonington Lighthouse is a charming piece of maritime history. Built in 1840, this granite lighthouse guided ships safely through the treacherous waters of Fishers Island Sound for nearly 50 years1. Today, it stands as a testament to the area’s rich nautical heritage and serves as the Old Lighthouse Museum, operated by the Stonington Historical Society1. Visitors can explore exhibits that showcase over 350 years of local history, including artifacts from the Battle of Stonington in 1814 and the life of Venture Smith, an enslaved man who bought his freedom2. Don’t miss the chance to climb the tower for breathtaking views of Long Island Sound and the surrounding states2. Whether you’re a history buff or simply looking for a scenic outing, the Stonington Lighthouse offers a unique glimpse into Connecticut’s past. Plan your visit today and step back in time at this iconic landmark!

The lady taking the entrance fee of $10 made no mention that at the top of the stairs you have to climb a ladder that ends at the platform then somehow hop up onto a platform with nothing to hold onto. I'm older and with bad knees, I knew I could handle the steps because you see them at the front door but I cannot do ladders. I did not go up the ladder, and told her when I got back down the steps that it was wrong to not mention the ladder (esp to an older person!). During the discussion about a refund she said well I gave you that free coupon for some other place but I had to remind her that she took it back because I would not have time to go because of their hours. She did then give me my money back. There should be a big sign with a picture of the ladder at the ticket desk. The museum itself isn't worth an entry fee, if you can't do that ladder in my picture then just take a photo of the outside. The point and beach down the road have great free views.

Buying tickets in advance ensured a spot, and it was super easy to do on my phone. You can park on Stonington Point, but you're missing out on shops, architecture and restaurants if you don't walk Water Street. It's a pretty cramped lighthouse, and you have to climb a ladder to get to the top. Even though it's not one of the higher lighthouses on the coast, you are still treated to a pretty awesome view. Only a few people are allowed in the tower at a time, and masks are required for everyone. The exhibits on the main floor were interesting, and the grounds and shoreline attached to the building are worth the visit.

My husband and I were recently in Stonington, CT. It was a very rainy day but we enjoyed ourselves none the less. The Old Lighthouse Museum is very near and dear as one of my ancestors, George Beckwith was once a lighthouse keeper there. My grandfather told me that George Beckwith saved many people's lives in a terrible storm. So nice to have a hero in our family line! After our Mom passed, my sister Pat found an old logbook that belonged to George Beckwith. Pat and I, on a trip to Connecticut took the logbook to Stonington and donated it to the Old Stonington Museum. We we're very pleased to do this and they seemed glad to get it. We did forget to put our family's name on the donation though. The museum is very...
