Just ok. Used to go to Zavala's in New London which was fantastic. We sat in the newly finished upstairs- decorated in bright Mexican flair. Open but cramped space, tables pretty much on top of each other - great if you like to dine with people you don't know yet. Pretty noisy. Not really a place for an intimate dining experience. Food is ok. Sort of. I had the Cochinita Pibil with pickled onions on top served in a banana leaf - nice presentation buuuut lacked true cochinita flavor and tenderness. The rice was, well.....pretty bad. No, it was awful - wet, mushy, no flavor that I could discern - except for the water it was boiled in. The mashed (refried?)black beans weren't much better - a thick black paste, somewhat dried out and, again, lacking in flavor. My daughter liked her chicken enchilada verdes and hibiscus margarita - more sour than sweet, which she liked. I had a Negra Modelo on tap which was delicious. For dessert we opted for the chocolate lava cake which was bathed in a syrupy sweet white sauce - the cake was very (too)sweet without the traditional rich Mexican chocolate flavor to balance out the sweet. The wait staff are very attentive and service is quite good. Food and drink came pretty quickly - and the place was full. I had high hopes but came away hungry and disappointed - but I did enjoy spending time with my daughter. Maybe we'll go again when the weather is better, sit outside and try something...
Read moreOk it’s Saturday night and fairly busy. 15 minute wait for table, so ordered drinks at the bar. Delicious fresh margaritas, a little pricey at $15 a drink. Got seated and ordered appetizer. Great guacamole and chips! Ordered dinner and went with second choice, first choice was sold out. Asked our waitress for waters and second round of drinks. Dinners arrived in about 15 minutes with server(not our original waitress). Server was very attentive as we again requested waters and cocktails that had previously been ordered and not served. Meals arrived hot and looked marvelous. The beef tacos were excellent. The chicken tacos were not. The white meat chicken was tough and bland and appeared to have just been boiled. Not what we expected from a five star restaurant. Another hostess/waitress came by about half way through our meal and realized no water or cocktails had arrived. She apologized and drinks arrived moments later. We finished our meals and received our check. It was odd that the same margaritas we bought at the bar, were each $2 less($13) at the table. We’ll write that off as human error. All in all, the restaurant staff were pleasant and the experience was good. We’ll give it another try when it’s...
Read moreAmazing food and service. Teresa, our server was amazing. So friendly and knowledgeable about all the options. Easy to talk to and genuinely a nice person. Margaritas were amazing, short ribs were amazing as was the salmon. Amazing guacamole. The vegetables were amazing as well. Spinach, mushrooms, sprouts, garlic, just amazing. Not just your typical green beans and broccoli. The only thing that could’ve had a better presentation was the refried beans. They were just kind of plopped on the plate. Maybe if they were put onto the plate with a pastry type dispenser, maybe a dollop of sour cream on them or something along those lines, other than that everything was banging, and we had an amazing experience. The only downfall would be it’s not very handicapped assessable. The whole area is not. It’s right in Stonington borough, on water Street where if you go in the summertime, parking is almost impossible we chose this time of year because we were there to see the...
