I recently had the unfortunate experience of visiting this rock climbing gym. I've been an avid climber for years, and I was excited to try out a new gym in the Long Island area. However, this place is just the worst!
First and foremost, the staff at this gym are completely incompetent when it comes to climbing. It's baffling to me that people who are supposed to assist and ensure the safety of climbers lack even basic climbing skills themselves. Their ignorance and lack of expertise were evident as they struggled to teach the belay classes we paid for. It's not reassuring when the people responsible for your safety don't seem to know what they're doing.
Furthermore, the bouldering mats in this gym are a disaster waiting to happen. They are in terrible condition and are shockingly inadequate in providing protection. Climbing is an inherently risky activity, and a gym's responsibility is to minimize those risks as much as possible. The subpar mats in this gym not only fail to do that but actually increase the likelihood of injuries. I've witnessed several climbers suffer painful falls and I've heard from regulars of this gym of people that have broken bones due to the inadequate cushioning provided by these mats. If it was me, I would be suing them.
To make matters worse, the response from the gym's owner is appalling. Instead of taking genuine feedback seriously and making improvements, they dismiss valid concerns as if they were insignificant. It's disheartening to see such an unprofessional attitude, especially when safety is at stake. It's clear that they are more interested in defending their reputation than in addressing the very real issues that exist within their facility.
I am an ardent lover of climbing, but I would strongly advise anyone considering this gym to steer clear. The combination of clueless staff, dangerous bouldering mats, and a lack of accountability from the owner make this gym a hazardous and disappointing choice. It's truly a shame that Long Island doesn't offer better options for climbers who deserve a safe and...
Read moreI really love this gym, the routes and the staff however I am giving a rating of 3 stars. When I first started going to this gym they always played a wide selection of music. Every song would be a different genre which I thought was great. Two of the experiences I've had there recently have not been like this. I went on a Monday and for over 2 hours the only music played was Korean Pop Music. I chose not to say anything because I figured maybe this would be a one time occurrence. Yesterday I went to the gym and for 2 hours they were playing very anxiety inducing drum and bass music. 2 HOURA. After about an hour and half my friend went up to the desk and explained she was having a hard time focusing on climbing and felt very anxious. It was very intense music. She was told "they don't take song requests" and she said no im just requesting you change the music. It fell upon deaf ears. About a half hour goes by and I can feel myself getting like angry for no reason and frustrated really easily, the music was driving me insane. If you like drum and bass I guess it would be a good day for you but it is not a popular music genre at all. Look it up and listen and think about if you want to climb for 2 plus hours listening to what sounds like a song that never ends. I approach the front desk myself asking if the same song is playing because I think I'm going insane. I am told oh its just the genre of music and I expressed that it was making me feel real anxious. It fell upon deaf ears again as the music was not changed for at least another 45 minutes. During that period multiple staff numbers from the front desk were very visibly pointing at my friends and I. I usually feel super welcome here but this experience left me with a bad taste In my mouth. Anxiety is a very real and intense thing to experience and to have that be disregarded like that did not make me welcome or valued as a customer/climber. I can understand if you want to throw a few drum and bass songs in the mix .. but over 2 hours with no breaks .. give...
Read moreHonestly, I have tried this gym numerous times. Time and time again I pray I have a better experience. Sadly, I don’t. The crew are nice. Its mainly the climbing I have a problem with. I think it has some of the worst routesetting I have seen. Now; before I continue, I have never tried Lead or Top Rope there. I am a boulderer. The boulders sometimes do not have grades on them, which in hinde sight isnt a huge problem for me, more so, I just want to track my progress. There setting is unbearable to me. It takes a portion of a week to set a small part of their bouldering wall with staff and in my opinion takes way to long for the set we do eventually get. When I want to come down I think I would rather prefer falling face down onto the floor because their mats might as well be concrete. I do not feel comfortable falling at any point, which makes me not try certain climbs with the way they are set. The set themselves make me contort my body in ways I probably should not, along with the climb feeling as if every move is desperate and has little to know flow. Now why do I still climb here even though I wrote harsh review? i come from the city to climb because it is the only indoor gym within NY that is currently open during the pandemic. I dont write this to be mean, but more critical. I will set for you...
