The Saratoga Battle Monument is a 155 foot stone obelisk that commemorates the American victory over the British at the Battle of Saratoga. The monument is situated high on a high hill that was once the site of Burgoyne’s camp in the battle. The monument has sweeping views of the nearby valley. There are 188 steps to the top of the monument. Inside there are 16 bronze bas-relief plaques that tell the story of the American Revolution. Some of the stories on the plaques are propaganda of sorts, but they are still very interesting works of art and give insight into how history is told. The view from the top is pretty good and you can see a long way on a clear day. On the outside of the monument there are four niches made life size statues of the generals who won at Saratoga. Facing north is Horatio Gates awaiting the approaching British army. Facing east is General Phillip Schuyler who looks toward his nearby estate. Facing west is Colonel Daniel Morgan whose rifle prevented the escape of the British. The niche that faces south is left intentionally empty. This is done for Benedict Arnold who helped the American Army at Saratoga, but later betrayed his country. It is a way to pay tribute to him, without actually remembering him. The park rangers at the monument were extremely helpful in explaining everything about the monument. Check the Saratoga National Park’s website for hours or call ahead and ask. Currently, the inside of the monument is open on the weekends. Admission is free! Definitely, a must see if you’re touring the battlefield. This is an awesome landmark for some great views and...
Read moreNeeds a LOT of work. Please take the Biden infrastructure money & fix these things. Please STOP listening to idiot Stefanik. I am correct about her. She's a MORON. I was born in Cambridge, NY ,& first 17 years of my life in Schuylerville. Stop letting the dummies run the town. Stop the nepotism. Use the infrastructure funds. I graduated 4th in my HS class in Schuylerville. I know what I'm talking about. Have hometown pride. Put some money into the Schuyler House, maybe as a B & B??? Beautify the battlefield as well. Modernize that IGA, it's ridiculous like 1965. There should be a Hannaford over near Northumberland. There should be a modernizing of that little bar in Grangerville which should become a Revolutionary War...
Read moreWe have been coming here for years and the website information is always inaccurate about when it is open. We had over 15 people here excited to climb this and the inaccurate information on the website led us all to waste precious family time together over this 4th of July weekend. Please update this information and open the monument! We are losing the opportunity to learn about the rich history of this area!!!! See pictures below to see all the people that were let down by the park services inability to cater to this community. Also as we were leaving we saw an elderly woman try to use the bathroom and they were also locked! What are our tax dollars...
