South Beach Park is a beautiful ocean front park in Vero Beach. We were in town for Mother's Day so we decided to stop by for a stroll and to take some pictures. During WWII Vero Beach was a Marine Air Squadron Base as well as a training facility for F6F Hellcat, SB2A Buccaneer, F4F Wildcat, and F7F Tigercat pilots. In 1994 they did night fighter training using F6F and F7F aircraft. The Fort Pierce Naval Amphibious Training Base was a 20,000 acre site stretching from Vero Beach to near Jensen Beach. Rockets, bombs, antiaircraft guns and small arms were tested on the beaches and in underwater missions before the post was abandoned in 1946. In 2018 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed the beach to look for remnants of World War II era munitions that could be buried. Through the years some have been unearthed by construction, erosion and targeted searches offshore and on the barrier islands.
Today the park attracts sun worshippers who can avail themselves of a variety of amenities that include beach access, a boardwalk, picnic areas with shelters, tables, and grills, and restrooms. The beach is lifeguard monitored. Beach walkers are invited to grab a basket to help clean up the beach. This beach is also a protected sea turtle site. South Beach Park offers amazing views, clean water, and soft sandy beaches. Best of all...
Read moreSouth Beach: Sunshine, Sandcastles, and Seagulls with an Attitude South Beach: it's not just a beach, it's an experience. An experience that involves dodging rogue frisbees, negotiating with seagulls for your fries, and developing an impressive tan... on one arm. The Good: The sand is soft, perfect for building sandcastles that will be promptly demolished by rogue waves (see "The Bad"). The people-watching is phenomenal. You'll see everything from surfers with physiques like Greek gods to families sporting matching Hawaiian shirts. The waves are great for boogie boarding, body surfing, or simply getting pummeled by the ocean. The Bad: Finding parking is like playing beachside Tetris. Be prepared to circle for an hour while seagulls judge you from above. The ocean is cold. Like, "makes you question your life choices" cold. Seagulls are relentless. They will steal your food, judge your sandcastle-building skills, and leave you questioning your ability to share a beach with nature. Overall: South Beach is a wild and wacky place, but it's also beautiful and endlessly entertaining. Just be sure to pack your sunscreen, patience, and a healthy dose of humor. And maybe a net...
Read moreCute little beach area. I took my family here in March of 2022. The water was beautiful. The sand was nice. The weather was nice. The only issue I really see what this beach is. The decline into the water happens quickly once you are in and so people don't really swim that far out because it's too deep. You can certainly do it if you want though. The waves in this beach seem mild compared to Cocoa Beach or Melbourne Beach. But it's a nice little area to bring the family to on the weekend. As for the area in general, I wouldn't really recommend it. I know a lot of Canadians like to come here but for people that are from Florida there are many other nicer areas and beaches to go to within driving distance. I recommend coming here if you haven't been Just so you can have the experience. Otherwise, unless you live close by, I wouldn't recommend coming too often with other...
