Was passing through the area and was recommended this course from the local disc golf store. I was NOT disappointed in this recommendation. This course was well kept and clean. There are a variety of shots from mostly open to wooded with elevation shooting up and down. The majority of the fairways were wooded and technical. Signage was good. I did not need to use UDisc to find any next tees. There is a full map at the beginning of the course and each tee pad that was available had a tee sign containing the basic information, hole #, distance, par, and rules or mandatory shots, and next tee. The basket aslo had arrows in them pointing in the direction of the next tee. The course layout has you start at hole 1 near the parking lot and ends with a short walk back to the lot. There is a practice basket by hole 1's tee box as well. There were a few holes in the beginning that had two tee pads but as you get through the course, there seems to be less holes with two pads. The main and usable tee pads are concrete. I'd recommend a bag over a cart on this course though it is doable. There are a few areas where you need to cross a small creek using large stones. There weren't benches to sit down at except hole 1 and some tree logs throughout. I do not recall seeing any garbage cans so plan to carry out what you carry in. I could easily see myself driving an hour out of my way to play this course on a monthly basis if I lived in the area. If I am ever in the area again, I plan to play this course again but with my full bag and not just the few discs I had with me. One round took me 1 hour and 45 minutes and that includes taking pictures/videos and 20 minutes spent looking for a disc. It was not busy when I arrived early on a Saturday morning but I imagine it...
Read moreI first played Southwoods as a 9-hole course, at the start of the pandemic. The course had its charm then, but the upkeep wasn't there. It was always sort of a wildcard course. This 18-hole layout update is something else. You can tell a ton of thought and work went into it. The layout (at the time of this review) makes sense. Directional arrows in the baskets are a nice touch. Latest setup is the best yet, and hole 18 at 500-foot range is much more manageable. I hope they keep that standard versus 800+ foot layout. The course is well maintained. This is easily a top 5 Central Iowa course as long as it stays that way. Pro-tip: Wear good shoes, pants, and bring some water with you. And maybe a few expendable discs. Be prepared and you'll have a good time. Also: If you're new to disc golf, I'd recommend getting some rounds in at other fun and less challenging courses before you attempt Southwoods to fully appreciate it. All in all: The new Southwoods is a great addition to the Des Moines area disc golf...
Read moreA great set up disc golf course. About 75% were in the wooded areas and challenging to very challenging. I love the hole #10, 13, and 18 with 844 feet long down hill. Defubitely this course is for intermediately to advance player. A must use on precise fore hand and back hand for each hole to get you through a good round of disc golf. I love the up hills, down hlls, woods, scenary, and creek and all these obstacles. Overall a great course with a lot of...
