Nice peaceful easy hike, entered off route 3 at burnt sawmill Rd. Took the main road down to gate and saw the waterfall from the, I would assume, old sawmill on the left. Spotted a water snake and lots of lily pads and flowers. Continued down main path and took a left onto a trail through a field and into the woods. Although I had my phone with me we didn't venture too far, took a left after crossing an old bridge, then a right after going uphill and then down. We got to another crossroads and decided to turn back for fear of getting lost. I have little sense of direction, and my kids know it, lol. Found an old family cemetery too, from the 1860's. Trails were well worn but not well marked. So peaceful though, next time I will pin my car location to maps so we will be less uneasy...
Read moreAll trails are unmarked. Half of them are for bikes/atvs. Some trails criss cross and go in circles so if you're going to spend more than a couple hours out there a map is indespensible. The only one I know is by Great Swamp Press available online and usually at REI and EMS. The place has a feeling of being somewhere else totally, like another region of the country. In my opinion could be the most wild of the state's parks and management areas as this one is the most wooded with no campgrounds, and no private properties or residences within it. It's area is second only to arcadia management area/beach pond state park but those are not one continuous tract of land as...
Read moreWe absolutely treasure this place. There are so many trails to choose from you rarely run into anyone, which is exactly what we're looking for. The trails are perfectly marked on All trails so it's impossible to get lost. It is perfect for dogs, short hikes, long hikes, mountain bikes, or just simple walks in nature. Definitely bring bug spray, loads of ticks and horse flies in the summer. Bring towels for the pups because there are rivers and ponds and if your dog is anything like mine, they will need to be hosed off lol. Seriously worth the mental health break, we usually hike 6 miles when we are here because we are so distracted by the beauty...
