The staff are welcoming and most informed and though needing expanded space and expanded staff, put on changing exhibits that are well worth a visit. Lodged in the Calvary Baptist Church, the oldest black church in Wichita, the museum uses its limited space well. In addition to rotating exhibits 4-6 times a year--now is Gordon Parks photographs--the back room hosts an amazing collection of African art that exceeds what I have seen at the Kansas City Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. The museum's Education Director, Christyn Breathett, brings programs into the schools for a small fee and Director Mark McCormick is brilliant, super knowledgeable and a very kind and caring person, a former journalist with a passion for this history which is the history of all Americans. 3rd Wednesdays at 1:30 there are Senior Wednesday lectures on a variety of topics which I have always found most interesting. Read moreThis was my first visit to this Jim of a museum for African American history in Wichita Kansas. It started off as being very welcoming. We had gone as a family we had a stroller as well so we were able to maneuver most of the museum with the stroller we did have to take my grandson out just to go upstairs. We also were met by the director who was very knowledgeable about the African-American plight in Wichita Kansas and surrounding areas. There were also areas for children to color there's children's books adult reading material books at on the history of the museum as well there's areas where you can make bracelets it's very interactive. I recommend anyone who is into the history of Wichita and the surrounding areas of African-American history to make sure that this makes it on your list...

To stand upstairs and look down into the sacred space with the sunlight filtered through the stained glass is to experience a particular kind of peacefulness. Breath deeply there and maybe close your eyes and hum the opening notes of your favorite hymn. Shane, thanks for shaking my hand and introducing yourself. Good luck and blessings on your expansion in the new...
