Formal Complaint Regarding Discriminatory Treatment and Improper Conduct.

Leadership at Robert’s Store and the San Mateo County Clerk’s Office.

Dear Robert’s Store Management and San Mateo County Clerk,

I am writing to formally file a complaint regarding an incident that occurred on November 3, 2024, at approximately 4:30 PM PT, at your store location in San Mateo County. During this visit, I was met with unacceptable treatment by both the store staff and a responding sheriff’s officer, who appeared to act inappropriately and with bias.

Upon entering the store to purchase a quick lunch, I asked an employee about the availability of a restroom. The employee informed me that there was no restroom available. I responded by noting that California and local business regulations typically require establishments to provide restroom access. At this point, the store manager, identified as Jose, appeared and abruptly directed me to leave the restroom area. He added that he would call the sheriff if I did not comply. I invited him to do so, expecting the sheriff to approach the matter with fairness and respect for my rights as a customer.

Unfortunately, when the sheriff arrived, I was deeply disappointed by the manner in which he handled the situation. Rather than mediate impartially, the sheriff appeared to side with the store staff in what I felt was an instance of clear favoritism. He informed me that if I returned to the store, I would be arrested — a threat I found to be excessive, intimidating, and unfounded, especially considering that my only action was to inquire about restroom access.

This entire interaction left me feeling deeply disheartened and disrespected, not only as a customer but as a proud American who has served this nation honorably for over a decade. The sheriff’s dismissive attitude toward my concerns suggested an element of discrimination that should not be present in any public service interaction.

A bystander, Mr. Tim from Woodside, witnessed the incident and has offered his contact information should further testimony be required. I am now bringing this matter to your attention and intend to escalate it through appropriate legal and administrative channels, as I believe that both Robert’s Store staff and the sheriff’s conduct were inappropriate, discriminatory, and inconsistent with the professional standards expected in San Mateo County.

Please review the store’s video footage from this date and time to see that I conducted myself respectfully throughout my visit. This experience was not only a personal affront but also a violation of customer service standards and public trust.

Great food and groceries. Horrible and stupid service. Since I've been alive I have gone to this grocery store and countless others. There are multiple checkout stands and you usually just pick and choose which one you want. Right? Well not here anymore I guess. For some moronic reason they have multiple checkouts and only 1 line for all off them. Never experienced this before. So the line backs all the way up the isle and everyone gets confused. Not only that but it is extremely inefficient. Doesn't make any sense. Why have multiple checkout stands and one line. Stupidest thing I've ever seen. An employee rudely asked me to get back in line.
