Hoi An Village Experience — Attraction in Hội An

This experience was so much more than I expected. This was far and away the best thing my wife and I did during our week in Vietnam.

My wife and I were bicycling through Tra Que and noticed a sign that said “water buffalo riding”. When I mentioned seeing it that evening, my wife expressed that she was very excited to do it but we only had one day left in Vietnam. That night, I searched “water buffalo riding” on Google and GetYourGuide and found the Hoi An Village Experience. We booked a tour for the afternoon the next day and received a quick response via WhatsApp within an hour to confirm the booking and inquire about any potential food allergies.

If we had just rode a water buffalo, that would have been enough. However, we also enjoyed a breezy bicycle ride through the rice paddies with stops along the way where Mr. Cu showed us the rice plants and various crops being grown, like sesame seeds and peanuts. We also learned about fishing and caught a few crabs! At the end of the evening, we joined Mr. Cu and his home and milled rice to make pancakes (banh xeo).

What struck me most about the tour was the joy Mr. Cu has for giving tours and the warmth of all of the locals we encountered along the way. I highly recommend any of the tours offered...

How to get to Bay Mau coconut forest tourist area With a starting point from Hoi An city, you have 2 ways to get to Bay Mau coconut forest: Going by river: You will catch a boat at Bach Dang wharf right in Hoi An ancient town, the boat will take you to the coconut forest down the Thu Bon river. By road: starting from Hoi An city, you will go on Tran Nhan Tong street, then cross Cua Dai bridge and go another half kilometer to reach the coconut forest. With this route, it only takes you about 10 minutes to drive. With the starting point being Da Nang city, you can choose 1 of 2 routes to get to the coconut forest: Route 1: Starting from Dragon Bridge, you drive to Hoi An Ancient Town in the direction of Ngo Quyen - Ngu Hanh Son. After that, you will move from the old town to the coconut forest by 1 of 2 options as above. Route 2: You start from Dragon Bridge, run all the way to Vo Van Kiet Street, then turn right onto Vo Nguyen Giap Street, go straight to Lac Long Quan Street, turn onto Tran Nhan Tong Street, go straight to the foot of the bridge. Cua Dai, go another 500 minutes to reach Bay Mau coconut forest.

Tham quan rừng dừa Bảy Mẫu nên đi vào thời gian nào? Để có chuyến tham quan rừng dừa Bảy Mẫu lý tưởng nhất, bạn có có thể chọn 1 trong 3 khung thời gian sau đây: Tháng 2 đến tháng 6: Thời tiết Hội An lúc này mát mẻ, khô ráo, không có nắng gắt rất phù hợp cho chuyến tham quan miền đất sông nước. Đi theo đường bộ: xuất phát từ thành phố Hội An, bạn sẽ đi đường Trần Nhân Tông, sau đó qua cầu Cửa Đại và đi thêm nửa cây số nữa là đến được rừng dừa. Với đoạn đường này, bạn chỉ tốn khoảng 10 phút lái xe. Với điểm xuất phát là thành phố Đà Nẵng, bạn có thể lựa chọn 1 trong 2 cung đường để đến rừng dừa: Cung đường 1: Xuất phát từ Cầu Rồng, bạn lái xe đến Phố cổ Hội An theo hướng Ngô Quyền - Ngũ Hành Sơn. Sau đó, bạn sẽ di chuyển từ phố cổ đến rừng dừa bằng 1 trong 2 như trên. Cung đường 2: Bạn xuất phát từ Cầu Rồng, chạy hết đường Võ Văn Kiệt, sau đó quẹo phải vào đường Võ Nguyên Giáp đi thẳng thì sẽ đến đường Lạc Long Quân, quẹo vào đường Trần Nhân Tông, đi thẳng để đến chân cầu Cửa Đại, đi thêm 500 nữa là đến là được rừng...

Mr. Cu was absolutely lovely and spoke excellent English. He is clearly passionate about offering an authentic cultural experience while also supporting the local community. He has been running his business for 12 years, and his dedication really shows.

We chose the market visit, coconut boat ride, and cooking experience. The team was incredibly thoughtful, accommodating our vegan diet and other participants’ allergies with great care. Our guide, Ha, was also wonderful—friendly, helpful, and kind throughout the day.

We had the chance to make bánh xèo using rice water we ground ourselves in the traditional way. Then we prepared all the ingredients for a fresh papaya salad, fried spring rolls, and a flavorful stir-fry with tofu and mushrooms. Everything was absolutely delicious, and the experience was just as enjoyable for our 12- and 9-year-old children—they loved every part of it.

I highly recommend doing this tour while you’re in Vietnam. Mr. Cu also offers another tour that includes cycling, helping local rice farmers, and even riding a water buffalo—perfect if you're looking for a deeper cultural immersion.
