absolutely best terrain for families.
take your little ones to smiggins holes to ski and board just down the mountain from the main resort go early july to mid august when there is plenty of snow as this is lower on the mountain and melts first when spring comes.
very gentle slopes for beginners, magic carpets, j bars to get you started and moving slowly until your ready to advance to a T-bar
take lessons if you can stretch your budget and you will enjoy your skiing experience more.
(go ice skating if you have never skied, before you go to the snow get some experience on a level gradient, skiing down hill is an expert sport not for the faint of heart)
but learning at smiggins is easy and fun.
if you have skiied before and are confident in riding T-bars and chairs head to perisher village 8!
perisher is great for families as it has all the gradient and skill levels catered for. pretty valley, happy valley and pleasant valley are our families favourites when travelling with the girls and Guthega for dare devil fun off jumps and scooting tree lines with the boys.
what i love the most is it’s an easy to navigate resort well laid out lifts so you can travel long distances easily and there is always a good spot even when the weather is off. and you can get indoors if needed.
perisher is a very wide mountain resort lots of runs varying skill levels and well sign posted and it’s super safe. the snow is never that deep which is good and bad.
bad if it’s not been snowing much it’s icy and hurts to fall (get lessons)
good you can find your way around and you won’t get into a situation where you fall upside down or can’t get up because the snow is so deep.
food is dear at the snow as it has to come a lot further up with difficult access so it’s all at a premium and that’s fair they have to make 4x profit to make it worth their while for the few months they are open. don’t skimp on food and drinks because of cost, your doing hard physical exercise you need to sleep and eat well to have any fun and go easy or don’t even drink alcohol.
my favourite place to eat is the Japanese noodles place!
perisher has good shops to up grade any equipment you have and i found their prices reasonable , surprisingly. which was great when goggles got foggy and stocks were fallen on. and extra clothing at fair prices to keep the girls rugged up warm.
when i used to hire equipment i used rhythm in cooma they have a huge shop and always have good hire equipment that rotates each year it’s not old and worn out. plus you can buy your own gloves googles and other warm things to keep everyone...

HOTHAM ENCOURAGES YOU TO SKI WHILE ILL! THEY DO NOT OFFER ANY REFUNDS FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE UNWELL AND UNABLE TO SKI AND ENCOURAGE YOU TO VISIT WHILE ILL!
Hotham is a dodgy resort operated by the company Vail which is a company with no interest in people's wellbeing. Structured to avoid complaints I watched several people be rejected by Hotham to go deal with Epic and Hotham actively didn't help several paying customers with issues with there lessons while I watched and was also not helped...
I recently took a family trip to Hotham. My 11 month old daughter contracted gastro while visiting and we had to go to hospital on our first night. The local nurse and doctors told us that there was a fairly large and severe gastro outbreak causing people to present at hospital and many were coming from Hotham. No such warning from the resort though.
When I was unable to utilise my ski lifts and lessons they refused to provide me a refund and said I had to be sick for over 30 days for them to provide a refund.
I am not wealthy and am a disability support worker and when a company who makes that much money doesn't provide a refund for services they didn't provide I see red. I cannot afford another trip to Hotham and they made it absolutely clear that they would prefer me to ski and spread the sickness than to come to any fair conclusions. As a result I went skiing on the last day after they refused my refund and informed everyone I could that I was unwell and to keep a distance.
They don't care if there resorts make no money, if they ruin pristine natural environments and charge exorbitant fees for lift tickets and offer no refunds if you do not use them due to sickness. They charge $150 a day for those lift tickets and they run regardless. Dodgy as. Skiing cost me about $400 a day from lift tickets to gear hire and lessons and I just hoped to recouped $150 per day of that but they refuse. ACCC here I come.
I will leave a review like this on every Vail resort every week until they respond and I will keep smashing them with complaints and everything I can. Dodgy,...
Read moreUPDATE: 2025 and it just keeps getting worse. The peak season dates (more costly lift ticket pricing), which has for decades incorporated NSW school holiday's, has now been extended by two weeks to cover QLD school holidays... all of course whilst the risk of insufficient snow coverage is greatest.
I’ve been skiing at Perisher and Smiggins since 2000 and have skied overseas in Cardrona (NZ) multiple times. Perisher and Smiggins have made next to no updates in all this time. Car parking has always been grossly inadequate. There is insufficient seating and space capacity considering the volumes of patrons (people who have paid thousands to ski/board there) they allow entry too. The food is grossly overpriced and low quality and services understaffed by rude, unfriendly, unprofessionally dressed/presented, disengaged, obnoxious 20 somethings. Tables are not wiped clean between customers or rubbish disposed off… absolutely unacceptable given the past two years of Convid, in which this resort loved virtue signalling just how much they "care about health". Bathroom facilities are absolutely disgusting .. not cleaned and rubbish all over floors.
Lifts are not built for the average season conditions - particularly wind. Lifts are continually on wind hold, forcing people to cram onto a few available lifts and wait 45 minutes to an hour or more to get on a chair lift. We love parking at Smiggins, as you can park right by the entrance of the far right building near the j bars and use them to access to link t-bar and ski to Perisher. But NO.... the past 3 years in a row Perisher REFUSED to open the link t-bar, meaning you have to either park at Perisher and walk significant distances from the car park, or use the shuttle bus. Lifts to Blue Cow were closed while we were there this season and Perisher had the nerve to advise patrons to use the ski tube instead, but then operated it in a reduced schedule, claiming (the underground skitube train) was impacted by strong winds. It's an endless money grab by Perisher!!!
The resorts in NZ are superior...
