THE single best country pub, not only in NSW, but likely Australia! I came across the South Hay Hotel when I had a vehicle mishap on the way to Brisbane and it was the best thing that could have happened. Marie & Ben are the most welcoming and friendly publicans I've come across and the locals and travellers alike were app treated the same. I had a Scotch Fillet that was served with a home-made creamy peppercorn sauce that would have been at home in the best pubs in most states. If you ever think of passing through Hay, DON'T! Do yourself a favour and stop in at the South Hay Hotel! P.S. The lizard in the photo is named Tex and is a legend!

If you want a good value and delicious pub feed this is the place to go. And being in the country you don't get small servings. I ordered the Wagyu burger and I was not disappointed. The hot ingredients were cooked perfectly and the salad parts were fresh. It is one of the best burgers I have eaten and it came with the right amount of chips on the side. $19 of epic goodness. Plus cold beer and friendly staff. Will be hitting this place up again whenever I visit Hay next.

(Bistro review) waited an hour for entrees, bit disappointing to see others order after us and have left after dessert before we received any food. Garlic sauce on garlic prawns had no garlic and a total of five small prawns. 1 extra star because onion rings were actually good. Avoid if you are travelling as it made for a late night on an empty stomach of wine while you wait.

This is the quintessential Country Aussie Pub. Where one can completely relax with a meal and a beverage after a long drive. My wife & I always stop at Hay on our trips through NSW & back. Never fail to come here for the best pub meals going around. The chef is simply brilliant, always getting the steaks perfect the way we order, medium rare, slightly more rare as requested. Everything else on the menu is just perfect as well. There is quite a reasonable selection of good wines. Not a huge range but what they do have is really good. Same with the beers. I'm keen on the Furphy's Ale on tap. Decor is pretty dated but clean & cheerful. Always makes you feel good. Look up at the inside ceiling for some light entertainment! While they don't have accommodation here there is a caravan park next door & two motels very close at hand. That is very handy as you can leave you car and walk without risking drink driving. There was a courtesy bus parked out front so I can assume they will pick up & drop off to other accommodation as...
