Nightmare!!! Tour of Amazon jungle. Would not recommend!!!
I had such high hopes of a great amazon jungle tour with Amazon Gero Tours. Instead it was a nightmare for 3 days 2 nights. It was far worse than I could imagined. The tour was very poorly organized from beginning to end. The lodge was crude even with a private shower. The guide did not have a clue to what many of the plants where we spent most of our time riding endlessly on the river seeing a few birds and a couple of dolphins in the distance. Our guide talked very little about the area and the food at the lodge was not very well prepared. It was sad to have spent so much time doing mostly nothing except ride on the river. The trip to and from the lodge was uneventful. In our case the driver picked up several locals, so my wife had to sit on my lap for most of the 2-hour ride. We had 11 people in a van made for 8. We were like sardines in the van. The show stopper for me was when I arrived at the lodge there is a FARMHOUSE WITH CATTLE, CHICKENS, LIVESTOCK, AND DOGS ONLY A HALF MILE FROM HIS FRONT DOCK AND CLEARLY VISIBLE. If I would have known this, I would NOT have booked this tour. The last thing I want to see or be next to is a farmhouse in the middle of the amazon jungle. I was totally shocked and could hardly believe it. Every day and into the night for sometimes hours at a time I heard chain saws, dogs barking, cows mooing, lots of music from CD players, family’s yelling, roosters crowing and a variety of other farm sounds. I am looking for a jungle experience not a farm experience. One of those things the tour company does not tell you. (see photo). We ended out tour a day early because of the boredom.
Amazon Gero Tours – Was a nightmare and disaster from beginning to end. We could not wait for the circus to end. I booked the 3-days 2 nights amazon jungle tour. fell far short on most every aspect from beginning to end. Highly dis-organized, very confusing what was going to happen on the tour, could not articulate what typical events we would encounter despite his web site listing specific events. We did not feel safe, or very comfortable ever. We were always thinking about our safety and if we were going to have to swim for our lives. Most of the time the guide did not provide life jackets, and this was during the high-water season. Poor guide got lost in the jungle after 10 minutes and could not describe most of the plants or vegetation and did not seem to know much about the amazon. I found the employees were impersonal, did not care about safety, lifejackets, and your own comfort and talked more with other co-workers than their paid guests taking the tour. It was like nothing was planned and everything was being negotiated at every phase of the trip and tour. My guide was on the phone all the time trying to coordinate things. There is no way I would book with this tour company again.
What you can expect from Gero is to post a long and rambling review of how wonderful he his and insult your review. What I have learned is Gero scours all of the review boards and publicly tries to make the reviewer sound like they do not know what they are talking about. I find Gero to be highly dis-respectful of others opinions and bullies anyone making a negative comment about is business. This is highly unprofessional and is another reason not to book with his tour company. You need to work on improving you business and understand more about other peoples experiences. The long rebuttal post Gero makes confirms to me this is one business to stay far away from. In talking to some of his employees they mentioned to me Gero does not like to take suggestion from anyone. I can not recommend ever doing business with this person again. I have returned to the amazon region a couple of times an have booked tours with some of his competitors and my experience has been wonderful, exciting, and made me want to come back...
Read moreWow! What an incredible experience this has been!! For a long time, I have wanted to visit Brazil, and the Amazon, and explore the culture and beautiful forests. I Keep Brazilian Rainbow Boa snakes at home in the UK, and longed to visit their natural habitat. I went with my husband, for my 40th birthday. My host, Douglas, where I was staying, arranged my tour, and I really had no idea what to expect. We had a taxi to the centre of Manaus, where we met our wonderful guide, Anselmo. From here, we got a car to the docks. Anselmo showed us the fish market and described all the local fish in detail. The boat took us to another side. Here we bought some corn, and chatted to some locals and saw the amazing water lilies. After some time, we changed vehicles, as the terrain became harder. During this ride, we saw a beautiful large red tailed boa constrictor, basking in the sun in the road. We then took a boat from another dock to the Ararhina lodge. What an incredible place!! before we was even shown to our room, we saw beautiful large lizards and a huge colourful moth. The place sounded alive. I was expecting basic, but the room was lovely - simple, just a bed with nets and a shower room, but still a socket to charge a phone - amazing. The shower was cool, but I guess it runs from the river - in the Jungle, you need a cool shower! We had food and headed out in the boats and saw an abundance of various birds and the beautiful pink dolphins. Just travelling in a small boat along the river, lookjng at the scenery was amazing in itself. Later that evening, we ate again and had a couple of drinks at the lovely little bar which is hosted by a great man. The noises of the jungle were incredible in the evening. Breakfast was great- lots of cakes, and the juices are superb. We then headed on foot into the jungle. The trees, the climate, the plants are all amazing, and our guide Anselmo is an incredibly knowledgeable man about both the wildlife and fauna and flora. He kept us very safe, and I didnt feel too scared, even after seeing the very venomous coral snake. The jungle noises, if you stop and listen are phenomenal. We saw monkeys and birds - but the jungle is dense, animals, of course want to hide, so you really have to look and listen. After this, I had my first fishing expeience and caught piranha. We later cooked the piranha and ate it for dinner - what an amazing experience. We then looked for caiman, of which there are many - you can see their eyes glowing in the dark, and the noises are unmistakable - Anselmo does a great caiman noise to see if they are about. The following day we were welcomed in to the home of a local man. We were shown various jungle produces, which I just find fascinating and can not believe what the jungle has to offer. Not only does Anselmo know everything about the jungle, its plants and produce and its wildlife, he can tell it all in different languages!! We were truly over whelmed by his knowledge, and the ability he has to tell us in English (but he is also able to do this in other languages). Our experience on this tour was unforgettable and unbelievable - I didnt want to leave. Our guide Anselmo was simply wonderful. The food was brilliant - traditional Brazilian cuisine. The rooms were comfortable, with air conditioning and bug nets. I got a lot more from this tour than I ever expected - I just want to go back now, for longer. The journey back was fine, we just didnt want to leave. The community really help each other out so much - i.e lifts in the vehicles - I loved this aspect, as it makes the experience very real, rather than just aimed at tourists. Everythjng was perfect in my eyes - I wish I could stay there forever. Thank you so much to everyone involved, especially Anselmo and Sheikh (Sheikh was our second guide, ensuring our safety and steering the boats - another...
Read moreWe booked a 2-days tour with air-conditioned room, costing R$600 per person. The agent told us that the tour include: the industrial zone fish market meeting of waters floating houses, houses on stilts, giant water lilies Indian tribe swim with dolphins piranha fishing guided night tour to see nocturnal animals jungle trekking and herb identification
We expressed our wish to visit Anavilhanas Archipelago, but the agent told us that destination was not reachable within 3 days. We only later found out that was untrue.
They picked us at 8:45am on April 20, and drove all the way across the river, into the jungle, and then a broad ride to the Anaconda Lodge Amazonas at 11am. The room is indeed equipped with air conditioner but the power was off and there was no remote control for the air conditioner. We waited 2 hours in the heat and humidity for lunch, and then another 2 hours for the activity to begin. The first activity was fishing, where we spent 3 hours catching nothing. Then we continued on the night tour. It was very dark in the jungle so we cannot see anything, but the sounds of animals were quite amazing.
When we back to the lodge, the power generator was running and many rooms were already running air conditioners. I asked for the remote contol, but the lodge manager refused, and saying that I can only get it after dinner. I keep asking why I have to wait after dinner while others can use it now. He ignored me at first. After I got upset and raised my voice, he finally gave me the remote control.
The second morning, as soon as the lodge administer got up, he immediately shut down power. The room has no hot water, towel, soap, or any other amenities you would expect at a regular lodge.
The jungle trek was ok. Our guide is knowledgeable. I follow him very closely, because he speak very softly. I think I am the only one that can hear him. My friend stood a few steps away and he later told me that he could not hear a thing.
After we protested about the missing activities, the guide took us to see the dolphins.
After we got back to Manaus, we went to the agent to ask for the missing activities that were supposedly included in our package. He at first tried to sell us another day tour. He insisted that, because we paid higher price for air conditioned room, they are entitled to make the tour "slightly" different. He insisted that omitting 5 out of the 9 promised activities was just a slight difference. He also mentioned that they have 20 years of reputation, so they do not care about one bad review.
After some very unpleasant arguments, he finally agreed to give us another day tour that include all the missing activities.
At the end, we lost one day (The activities in our 2-day tour could be easily done in 1 day), but still managed to see most of what we wanted to see. Spending the night at the lousy jungle lodge was a waste of both money and time.
If you want to book with them, I strongly recommend that you ask for a written list of included activities and services, and record your conversion. You also want to make sure you have extra time in Manaus for the...
