Grubby, character lacking, back sunded hostel miles from anywhere. Does not look like pictures or meet expectations from description. |The hostel is located over two floors. During the first few nights I was on the top floor in a room on the side of the street with a small window facing onto it. The owner sat right outside the room most of the time on a desk in common space so when I wanted to cross the main room to use the toilet or even just sit in the common room I felt as though I couldn’t relax. He also would sit in that desk like he was monitoring everything. He wasn’t overly friendly.|In the early evening his 1 year old child would play on the table, which is always covered by toys and books and not anything like the picture, so it was hard to relax again. This was especially disappointing as this guest house is so far away you can’t just pop back in the day so when you do get back after been tired from sightseeing etc a screaming child taking up the whole spare is the last thing you want. |I’m not sure they cleaned the top area the whole time whilst I was there and it felt dirty. The showers were also cold. The downstairs ones were better but still luke warm. |During the last two nights I got put downstairs which was better as finally I felt like I had some space to relax. The kitchen was dirty though and Ill equipped. Apart from the view which is nice, this guest house is not worth it. |Very...
Read moreThe view from the hotel is great (it’s at the entrance of a favela, and looks out onto Sugarloaf Mountain), and the staff are quite friendly as well. If you stay in this hotel, make sure you get Tony Lucena (Tony Rio Service/City Tour) to drive you around the city. We’re a family of four with two boys aged 9 and 3, and we had a great time in Rio thanks to Tony. He not only brought us to the famous sights (Corcovado/Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain, Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches, etc.), he also helped us find the best exchange office to get Brazilian reals, waited for us while we bought needed items at the supermarket, called an ATM helpline for us (we don’t speak Portuguese), and brought us to a restaurant that served great Brazilian cuisine (and we even paid for his meal just to show him how grateful we are). Tony also speaks a bit of English (in addition to Spanish and Japanese [because of his wife]), and because he was very friendly and accommodating, we never had any communication issues at all. We thank the hotel staff for their help, and we especially wish Tony and his family all the best...
Read moreI've been staying at Casa48 for a couple of nights. Axel, one of the owners and a great tour guide, invited me to come over for some caipirinhas (very delicious) after we did a tour together. When I went there and saw the great terrace with a stunning with and the pool on the roof, I fell in love with this place and booked a couple of nights immediately. Everyone working at Casa48 is very welcoming and you feel like being at home. It's very clean, nicely decorated, delicious breakfast and sometimes there is also a yummy Brazilian dinner organised. Be prepared to walk 15 minutes to the metro station or to take an Uber to get to town. But the view, tranquillity and all is definitely worth it and it's so much better than staying in the...
