It is difficult to rate any hotel in Rio 5 stars due to being from the United States and having high expectations on accommodation and amenities, but Casa Nova Hotel gets a 5 star rating from me.
Being in Centro/Lapa and the online reading of the dangers of the area, it was one of the best parts of my trip. The locals are very friendly people and welcoming, there was only one occasion where we were harassed and the hotel manager quickly came out and took care of the situation.
The rooms are very comfortable and the air conditioning unit in the room has it near blizzard in the matter of minutes. The rooftop facilities (gym, bar, pool) and just the seating/lighting made it a little more worth the stay. Free weights in the gym (dumbbells), a bartender who knows how to make some amazing drinks, and being a smoker and able to enjoy a cigarette at the bar was nice as well.
We stayed at the Casa Nova Hotel for 4 days to be near the Sambadrom and historical sites. Afterwards, we had planned on staying at the Palace in Copacabana, the drinks at Casa Nova were better, the management was better, the food was better, the air conditioning was better, and actually experiencing life with the locals was better than the tourist town of Copacabana. I'm saying this as a white male from small town Alabama, USA who can't speak Portuguese.
I didn't have any issue with any staff member with a language barrier at the hotel, every person could speak at least moderate English and were extremely helpful and friendly. I wish I had booked my entire...
Read moreExpensive and badly located. Noisy. The air conditioning in the room never worked. The mattress was old and sagging. The sheets had holes. The room had moisture on the walls. There was an old urine stain on the toilet seat. There were also ants on the nightstands and near the refrigerator. It does not have parking. I asked for a regular tea at 10pm and they very reluctantly answered that they couldn't prepare it for me (at that time there stops being any type of service for guests). They don’t speak Spanish and understand little English, so they ignore any complaints. Pass...
