The last time I visited Sihanoukville, Cambodia, was in November 2018. At the time, the city had the feel of a vibrant provincial town, still green and without tall buildings. I visited Sihanoukville again in March this year and was very surprised at the transformation of the city. I was told that the arrival of Chinese capital has transformed the city. The city was transformed into a modernized city with a forest of high-rise buildings and sparkling neon lights shining at night. It meant that the image I had of this city had changed dramatically.
To cut to the chase, there is a casino hotel that was set up mainly by Japanese people among such a strongly Chinese (not in a bad way) city. That is the Grand La Vogue hotel. It can be said to be a hotel where you feel the spirit of ‘hospitality’. It seems to me that all the employees understood that spirit. The hotel's overall appearance is calm, and the neon lights at night are based on a blue color and are not sparkling. In fact, I thought this was what differentiated the hotel from others. In addition, the rooms were on a par with first-class Japanese hotels, with good beds and other furnishings, and the water flow in the showers was impeccable. And the hotel's restaurants include teppanyaki and churrasco restaurants. These restaurants are also in Tokyo. I actually went in and tried the food and was very satisfied with all of them.
Finally, as a side note, if you are in Sihanoukville, why not visit Koh Rong Island? The water is clear and shallow, the sand is white, and it's a great...

Read moreMy first casino experience – and I’m so glad it was here!
This Japanese-owned luxury hotel in Cambodia offers an exceptional level of omotenashi (Japanese hospitality) that truly sets it apart. The teppanyaki restaurant serves incredibly tender and flavorful wagyu beef, and the stylish bar provides a luxurious yet relaxed atmosphere.
The entire facility is spotless, with carefully selected amenities and elegant interior design. The staff’s warm smiles and high level of professionalism made every moment special.
I’ve also stayed at a well-known luxury hotel in Phnom Penh (part of the Bonvoy group), but in terms of facilities, amenities, and hospitality, this Japanese-run hotel was clearly a cut above the rest.
It was also my first time trying a casino, and thanks to the Japanese staff who kindly explained the rules, I felt completely at ease and enjoyed the experience fully. Since the hotel is still fairly new and not crowded yet, now is the perfect time to visit.
One thing that truly impressed me was seeing the staff picking up trash around the hotel with bright smiles one morning. It’s a beautiful example of Japanese-style volunteer spirit. As a result, the area around the hotel is exceptionally clean—it almost felt like I was back in Japan.
If I had to point out anything, the air conditioning was a bit strong for my taste. Also, the rooftop was still under construction during my stay (though it may...
