Review of Sok San Beach Resort, covering transport, the good, and the bad. Overall, I really liked this place for a couple of days of quality beach time.

Transport:

The hotel's website covers details of their own boat service from just outside of Sihanoukville, but makes no mention of getting there from elsewhere. However the resort does now run a once daily pick up from Koh Rung Sanloem (the other island) and can also drop you at Koh Touch (the main pier on Koh Rung) if you're using one of the public ferries. The hotel will email you details when you book.

If getting to Koh Touch on the public ferry and on your own, i strongly recommended you speak to the hotel about their boat, as I do not recommend taking a motorbike taxi to Sok San. I was travelling on my own and didn't have a reservation for the resort (so didn't know that they'd started a scheduled boat to Koh Touch /Koh Rong Sanloem), and couldn't find any current information on public boats to Sok San Beach (Island Speed Ferry used to run one, but their staff told me it had stopped because not enough people were using it). Locals recommended a motorbike taxi as much more economical for one person than paying the $35 asked by the taxi boats at Koh Touch. However, despite what you will be told, the road to Sok San is mostly not paved and not in very good condition. It is very bumpy, with patches of sand where your bike almost tips over and several bits where the path is so narrow you have to duck to avoid being whacked with tree branches. It took an hour after I arrived for my hands to stop shaking.

The good:

The beach here is, quite simply, glorious. Soft white sand, turquoise water, really beautiful. The beach and sea were clean when I visited in mid-November, and the hotel does a good job maintaining the beach in front of the property. Even away from the property, the beaches were fairly clean, with little rubbish washing up at this time of year.

The hotel staff are all lovely. Big shout out to the guest services director, who is an absolute sweetheart.

Wifi worked really well, both in my room as well as on the beach. AC also worked well. The rooms are clean with good showers, and plenty of storage space.

The bad:

The beds, at least in the cheaper rooms where I stayed, are very hard and not at all comfortable. Dunno if they're better in the more expensive rooms, but I had trouble sleeping the bed was so hard. The bed linen was also in quite a sorry state, with so many stains it looked quite off-putting (I'm sure it was clean, but it looked grubby because it was so stained).

The food is not great - the local food seems to have been dumbed down for western palates so much that it doesn't taste like Khmer food any more, and the Western food was a bit hit and miss. It's edible so you won't starve, but it's just not memorable. The management of the restaurant also seems a bit haphazard - I kept being asked the same questions by different staff (like being asked if I was ready to order 10 minutes after I had already ordered), and often part of my order wouldn't arrive unless I reminded them, so they appear to not have a good system in place for who looks after which table. I only stayed 2 nights so didn't bother eating out of the resort, but there are several restaurants attached to cheap hotels in the nearby village, if you want some alternatives.

Final notes:

You can get some good deals on booking sites like Agoda, with significant discounts below walk in rates.

FYI, the hotel has a policy that you can't reserve long chairs on the beach, but that's not enforced and I saw a lot of people putting down towels before breakfast, and then not using the chairs for hours. As the property wasn't full when I visited, this wasn't a problem and I could always get a chair when I wanted one. But if the property was full, you might have an issue, and it might be wise to plan your day so you hit the beach early if you wanted to use a long chair.

There are also a bunch of dogs (and 1 cat) that hang about the beach near the restaurant, but they're...

We decided to leave after 1 night here.

The beach around the resort is knock out beautiful and, more widely, Sok San is a wonderful beach, shallow enough, warm, clean when we were there, and very swimmable. The town is a small dusty street with some typical restaurants which are nice, cute at night, nothing standout, not party central.

However (here it comes..). the owners seem to be running what was clearly once a gorgeous chilled place on low power mode, investing minimally if at all, and unfortunately it’creaking in every direction, as many reviews here observe. This is not the fault of the helpful, kind staff who were doing their best in the circumstances. We were lucky enough to find a room at Golden Beach which, whilst quite resorty, shows what investment and care looks like. High season, the price was more but not substantially and in terms of, well, everything, day and night. Day 2 we got mopeds and toured this wonderful island and it’s clear there are huge developer plans for the island, and it looks like Sok San resort area is earmarked for grander things - perhaps it’s already been bought up, and that’s what’s going on. However, the interim position for this place which looks like it will last some years, is not one we wanted to include in our trip, and we were well out of there. I should point out that the staff were kind and understanding.

Highs - gorgeous beach, fine sand, swimmable warm turquoise water. Food was ok although much better to be found elsewhere on the island - we only had one breakfast and one lunch. Lows - too many, with most fixable if they invested: The timber boardwalks are rotten, splintered and collapsing all over the place. You could easily put a foot through and cause an injury. I wouldn’t blame the maintenance guy - he was doing his best with a couple of old planks of wood, a bag of nails and a hammer, but this is a proper project that needs doing. Some time soon, someone will end up with a lump of it stuck in their leg, if they’ve not already. The pier is the same. Many sunbeds rickety / breaking and stained cushions need replacing Cushions in waiting area same. We had a nice family room, 2 linked bedrooms which should have been perfect, but: Stained, threadbare, ripped sheets and pillow cases, I’m sure it’s not blood as some suggest but stained nonetheless. How easy would it be to replace the sheets? And what an effect would it have? A/C is on its last legs - ours were limping along, other guests said theirs didn’t work Ceiling fans caked in dirt High shelves in cupboards with trash / old fag packets on them Branded Sok San refillable soap dispensers etc a lovely, sustainable idea but stained and corroded and needing to be replaced Plastic bags stuffed into rotted timber corners in bathrooms Shelves in bathrooms heavily stained through lack of sealing of timber I could go on but I think you get the idea. If you, like us, were on the fence about booking it, I hope this helps manage your expectations. We thought it wouldn’t matter to us but there’s a fine line between rough and ready, and dirty / crumbling.

After our move we biked over to look around the island which is gorgeous. We’re not done yet but at this point I’d recommend biking over to Lilly’s for lunch by the river, which is gorgeous, Palm beach - again stunning - looked like a nice peaceful more backpackery spot. For a traveller beach BBQ vibe I guess younger folk would enjoy Koh Tuch but we went at night and it...

The two stars are only for the really nice beach. The rooms are expensive and the service is very bad. The rooms are very very small. It was really hard to open our luggage as there was not enough space. The breakfast is a joke. You can choose between 3 different types. We have chosen the Continental breakfast which includes 2 small pieces of cheese and dark bread, 1 really small piece of ham, 1 croissant, a tiny bowl of muesli, and jam. It is not possible to order additional food for free (you have to pay if you want something else or they just say no, it is not possible to get something else). Thus, I was still hungry when I finished my breakfast. The coffee and tea is made from tap water which has a really bad taste (like directly from the sink). The prices for drinks are approximately 2-4 times higher compared to local Cambodian restaurants and the food is up to 10 times more expensive. Beach towels are not always available and if you ask for some they just tell you to wait 15 minutes but after waiting you have to ask again and again. We once waited for more than one hour. If you ask the waiter at the restaurant for something (like a spoon) they say yes, but they are ignoring you. The same applies for the reception. After cleaning our rooms, towels were missing several times. If you ask at the reception, they say "yes, the housekeeping will bring some", but unfortunately nothing happens. On one day we had to ask for towels 3 times until we got some. So, talking to the staff at the hotel is like talking to a wall. The worst thing happened when we checked out. We booked and payed for a transport (a boat to another island) in advance when checking in. When checking out, they told us that there will be no boat today. After discussing it for a long time and showing them the receipt we finally got our boat. I will defenitely never come again!

Lows - too many, with most fixable if they invested: - The timber boardwalks are rotten, splintered and collapsing all over the place. - The pier is the same. - Many sunbeds rickety / breaking and stained cushions need replacing - Cushions in waiting area same. - We had a nice family room, 2 linked bedrooms which should have been perfect, but: - Stained, threadbare, ripped sheets and pillow cases, I’m sure it’s not blood as some suggest but stained nonetheless. How easy would it be to replace the sheets? And what an effect would it have? - A/C is on its last legs - ours were limping along, other guests said theirs didn’t work - Ceiling fans caked in dirt - High shelves in cupboards with trash / old fag packets on them - Branded Sok San refillable soap dispensers etc a lovely, sustainable idea but stained and corroded and needing to be replaced - Plastic bags stuffed into rotted timber corners in bathrooms - Shelves in bathrooms heavily stained through lack of sealing of timber I could go on but I think you get the idea. For a traveller beach BBQ vibe I guess younger folk would enjoy Koh Tuch but we went at night and it was a bit much.
