We stayed at the W Montreal for 3 nights during Canada Day/4th of July weekend and enjoyed our time. We were in a fantastic suite and it was a great fit for the kind of relaxing weekend we were hoping to have. Being able to come back to our room after exploring the city and sit on a couch while we figured out what we were going to do the next day was great as was the bathtub where we could soak after long days of walking.
The interiors were designed very well and are very modern, typical of all W's we have visited. It's a very comfortable and trendy feel in the spaces. The living room area in the lobby was great and was accented with great coffee table books and local art. The restaurant on site was fantastic with engaging pieces of art and very good food. All of these components reminded us of our stay at the W in Barcelona.
The only portion of our trip that was inconsistent was the staff, and that being said, at no time was anyone subpar. It's just that some staff members clearly went above and beyond and others appeared more challenged by managing the requests of multiple guests in a timely manner. Before our arrival, we noticed this trend via email correspondence and were a little confused, but it made more sense during our stay. A few days prior to our trip we received a very nice email asking us about what we were hoping to get out of our stay, which was fantastic and greatly appreciated. But the response to our email was handled by someone other than the original sender and it was a little lackluster.
Upon arrival, we met Alexandre when we went to valet our car (great guy and incredibly helpful). We were sorry we didn't see him again as he was the best first interaction we've had at a hotel to date. Very relaxed and down to earth but very helpful too.
When we went to check in around 3:15 we were very nicely told our room was not yet ready and that we would receive a phone call when it was. No problem at all. We were up celebrating a special occasion but we understand that there are other guests staying at the hotel and had no problem waiting. We went back to explore the city for a little. Unfortunately, a phone call never came through for us. As Americans visiting Canada, there may have been multiple reasons for that due to each country's cell network so I don't want to jump to conclusions. Someone may have called us and we just didn't receive it. At no point were we upset by this, just confused. We returned a little more than 2 hours later to check on the status of our room and were informed that the room was ready. Both hotel staff members at check in appeared a little overwhelmed during this time and neither asked about our preference for our SPG gold welcome gift. Is that a huge deal? Not at all, but it's the first time that's happened to us and we wouldn't have expected it from this property. Since two separate people handled our check in process, I imagine this is how the confusion resulted. After receiving our keys, hotel staff brought our bags up to our room and we were able to relax.
Our room was very nice and large. We had requested a quieter room as we wanted to try to get some rest this trip while still exploring a new city. The room was very quiet and we really appreciated that. Sleeping in went a long way. It seemed like it was a very busy weekend at the hotel with a wedding so it was great to be able to get a quiet room in the midst of that.
We did have another confusing staff interaction our first night that resulted when we received a phone call from the front desk informing us that someone at the hotel had tried to deliver something to our room but the do not disturb sign was on our door so they did not. We were asked for permission to have someone come back with the delivery and we asked them just to knock and that they would be right up. We waited 45 minutes and didn't hear a knock. To our knowledge, no one came back that evening, however the following evening someone delivered a nice note with two Joe Beef beers and some chocolate, a very nice gesture but a little confusing with the timing. It's possible priorities changed and schedules had to be adjusted to respond to other issues in the hotel, but there were a handful of what appeared to be minor misses in communication that happened during our stay that took a potential 5 star stay to a 4 star stay. Our check out interaction was great and the woman who handled that Monday morning did a fantastic job. She was incredibly nice and helpful with the process.
Overall, we had a great stay and will absolutely stay again if we are in the area. The staff that were excellent really were excellent and the others were still good, just not as excellent as their colleagues. I strongly recommend, but from a service standpoint, be aware that you may have inconsistent interactions with staff. All will be good and a few...
Read moreMy fiance and I stayed at the W hotel for a birthday getaway. We had stayed during the winter a few years ago and had a wonderful experience, so we figured we'd return. I'll go through each facet of the hotel:|Check-In & Concierge:|Smooth, the front desk team is super friendly, polite and helpful, which I think makes a difference. My fiance's family works within Marriott, so was slightly disappointed that we did not get offered an upgraded room (we did last time), but alas, a nice room nonetheless.||The Room:|We stayed in one of the "Mega" Suites - decently sized, with a large desk and chaise lounge. Full soaker tub and separate shower, which is nice. Toilet is also separated by a door. Only one sink though. The bathroom is also 'open concept', but there are curtains to close the bathroom off if you want privacy.|The view was ..not great lol. ||Amenities:|This is where W loses a lot of points, and brings my rating from a 5 to a 4. Some examples:|- At concierge (or near the elevators), there used to be infused water (at least in 2023) - this is such a small touch that I think really adds to the experience of being at a higher end hotel. Since our last stay, they've replaced it with a filtered water system. It's...okay. Not cold. and seems impersonal.|- The 'Gym': you can tell that it there was an intention to have it fully staffed at one point, but my sense is that it is not widely used, and as such they abandoned this plan. Regardless, there are guests still using it sporadically, and it should be stocked accordingly. There were no cups by the water machine, and the cleaning wipes for equipment was empty. |- Room Amenities / Cleaning: The clock was wrong and had not been adjusted for daylight savings. We started off with 2 robes..for whatever reason the cleaning staff took one away and didn't replace it one of the days. One day another cleaning staff left a dirty cleaning cloth in the bathroom lol. There was an inadequate amount of larger towels. They didn't replace my shower cap. Again, it's not like this is completely necessary, but I think it takes away from that 'higher end' experience. I think there's just a lack of attention to detail.|- Gaming Room: We never used it, it is pretty small and you have to pay for use (but apparently drinks/food included).||Location: The major plus of this hotel is how close you are to old montreal. Literally steps away. 10 min walk away from the train station. 15 min walk away from the Eaton Centre and you can take the underground path (which the concierge was very helpful in giving us navigation instructions!)||So here's what I'll say overall - if you're looking for a hotel that has a strong location with decent rooms, then this is an ideal hotel. If you are looking for a hotel experience, then look else where. The lack of attention to detail has me wondering if there's been a management change, and is worthy...
Read moreThe missus and I stayed at the W for 4 days in July 2011. We will definitely be back.
Location: The W sits a little NW of Old Montreal, in easy walking distance. There's also a Metro entrance in Square Victoria directly in front of the hotel, offering direct travel on the Orange Line to the Plateau, Jean Talon Market, and other areas of interest.
Checkin: As predicted (and noted in our reservation), we arrived around 2pm. The clerk noted my status and, without any prompting, offered 4pm check-out on our last day. She was extraordinarily patient with our rusty French, not to mention charming and pleasant.
Room: In excellent shape, with all amenities in place. The view out over the square (for rooms with an exterior view) is quite pleasant, and rather dramatic at night.
Service: In a word, fantastic. On returning to the room our first night, we found a tray of bonbons and a bottle of Canadian wine (flavored with maple syrup) waiting for us, along with a note of congratulations on our anniversary. In the Whatever/Whenever department, over the course of the stay we asked for a few things (shower cap, sewing kit, champagne flutes) that were all promptly & cheerfully delivered. And our charming friend at the front desk happily took care of mailing a postcard for us.
Concierge service was unfailingly polite and attentive. We'd hoped to have dinner at a well-known foodie restaurant which hadn't responded to my pre-arrival email & wasn't picking up the phone when we called. (They turned out to be doing renovations.) The people staffing the Top Desir desk kept at it for us over the course of a couple days & finally managed to get us a table on our last night in town.
The concierge and bell staff also get high marks for the Acura service. We asked about getting a late evening (~9:40) ride up to Mile End for dinner; even though the service normally stops at 9pm, and despite the fact that this destination was outside the usual range, we were accommodated.
On-site bars: The Mrs. & I were more interested in sightseeing/foodie haunts/museums than in the bar scene, but in the late evenings from Wednesday through the weekend you really can't miss the fact that the W is a very trendy destination for the locals. People watching is good there.
The service and friendliness at the hotel were excellent. We would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone...
