My stay at Shangri La Guangzhou was horrible. I have stayed at the shangri la Bangkok and Pudong and had a better experience. Moreso , I come to Guangzhou for business just about every 3 months and have stayed at the Ritz Carlton , Four seasons , The W hotel , The Mandarin and had way better service. It was quite sad to find out that during my stay , almost all of the staff could not understand English. I was very lucky to come across my new and helpful Malaysian friend (Shinyee) who spoke very good English and assisted me tremendously. The only day she was off , I had a world of trouble. I have a translator but on this day , she was running late. I went up to conceirge to inquire about a package which had to be delivered and to book a Taxi for the airport the next day. I was shocked when a girl at your conceirge told me she doesn't understand English and left me hanging for a quick minute. I then walked up and cued on the line to talk to someone at the check in counter. When it was my turn , it took a lot of explanation for the receptionist to understand my need/want. She then walked me back to conceirge where a gentleman was present upon our return. She said he could understand English. It turns out he could barely understand me and I tried not to get frustrated. We got my package that was delivered. Now , booking a Taxi to pick me up for the airport was a whole new ordeal. We struggled and he finally understood my flight info. Now going to dinner downstairs at the buffet was very upsetting. Non of the waitresses spoke English. They will rush to clean up my table and avoid me because of the language barrier. They were even avoiding eye contact with me. I finally walked up to one and asked for Chamomille tea. She kept on saying green tea , black tea .........nooooooo Chamomille tea. She then said okay and walked away. She brought a tea cup half full with hot water and looked nothing like tea. I asked her what type of tea was in my cup and she kept on saying tea tea. I finally gave up , didn't drink the tea and left the restaurant which I didn't care if I was charged for the dinner even though I barely ate. I sat on the table for a while observing and had to even beg for my ticket to sign and leave because they were all avoiding me. Quite a pitiful and worst experience for someone who has traveled to about 40 different countries. Eva at the spa was fantastic. I went there to relax and was glad to find her so welcoming , empathetic to my experience and made me feel safe. It's scary because as a guest , if you have a medical emergency , you will die because no one can understand you at the hotel. Quite sad for such a beautiful hotel with picturesque...
Read moreLong time didn't write the travel review in TripAdvisor (one of my favourite travel websites), as supporting our country's travel industry, I decided getting around more our country rather than foreign countries, so this time travelled in Guangzhou+ Conghua for relaxing and hot spring for 8 days, last 2 nights stayed in Guangzhou Shangri-la from 13-9 to 15-9, room no. 2305, which I hadn't been to before as the brand is falling away in terms of service and facilities, this hotel hasn't been an exception as I had a terrible experience, so luckily just stayed 2 nights to the end... ||Pors: Thank you to the lobby manager, James, for the arrangement and for the birthday cake for my wife, which made us feel delighted.||The pool has a resort atmosphere which apart three areas of the pool also well-arranged.||The view of the room is fantastic, although the decorations are relatively outdated, but the maintenance is decent. ||Cons: The hairdryer is ineffective and outdated, requiring continuous button presses for airflow, which is really inconvenient for those with long hair. ||In addition, we checked out at the lobby encountered a very terrible experience. When we left our luggages in the lobby after checked- out, I drove my car to the hotel entrance from basement car park for took our luggages, one of the doorman, the surname called Jiang(江), men, wore glasses, asked me get forward of my car around 30 meters with no reason, I then asked why as there was no car and no other people at the moment execpt us also I didn't bother anyone else(The managerial staff should check the CCTV as it is the proof) , he said nothing and just kept asking for that, does it make sense??? I have right to park my car at the entrance as we are guests of the hotel right???Are we not guests? Do Hong Kongers not need to pay for a stay??? Not welcome for Hong Kongers??? Or so jealous of Hong Kongers!!! This so-called "staff" is absolutely disgusting and not worth being a Shangri-la staff, really low-quality, as the saying goes, "A piece of rat faeces spoiled the whole pot of congee", this guy really is... It's unimaginable why Shangri-la have such a low-quality employee like this, which absolutely drags down this hotel brand, also unfair to other high-quality staff...I have almost stayed in all Shangri-la in Southeast Asia, and I have never liked it before. I think the management should sort it out to maintain the reputation...
Read moreIve just checked out of the hotel. Last night at about 11.30pm while asleep, I was woken by a loud noise from the bathroom. I assumed it was the exhaust fan. Then later I realized it may have been the water pressure from the wall pipings assuming the room nextdoor may have been having a late bath that it creating this loud pressure noise from my bathroom. I closed the bathroom door, the noise remained unbearable to sleep with. So called reception to notify of the problem. Receptionist advised they would send a colleague to check. I waited 15 minutes no one came to check. By this time, a few guys had stumbled back into the hotel drunk and creating so much noise and extremely loud conversations and laughs on the 12th floor adjacent to my room. I again called reception and advised they would send someone up immediately. No one came even after a one hour wait. By this time i was so wide awake and eventually wasn’t able to get to bed until 2.30am. I had an early start at 6.30am for a 7am breakfast to meet with clients. Obviously only having 3.5 hours sleep. After breakfast I lodged the complaint with front desk on the basis that no one came to assist with the noise issues I had resulting in poor sleep. Reception took my mobile number and advised the Duty Manager would call me. No one called me throughout the day. This is also after numerous times going back to reception to get my key to work in the lift. At check out this afternoon I met the Duty Manager where expressed my utter disappointment at the lack of service accorded to me, the treatment and the ‘’no care” attitude. He offered me a complimentary meal to compensate for the issue I was faced with. I was so offended by this offer of a measly meal to compensate for a night’s lost of sleep and the fact no one came to my rescue even after 2 phone calls. The Duty Manager asked what was my preference of compensation, I requested for a one night’s complimentary accommodation to which he replied with a firm NO! I was extremely disappointed and left totally disillusioned at the treatment by what I thought was a 5 star hotel. My day was fully affected as I had business meetings, TV and media interviews and now I fly to Qingdao for further diplomatic engagements and I’m already exhausted from lack of sleep following last night’s incidents. What an appalling experience and a Duty Manager that was very unhelpful. I will not stay...
