We had a terrible first night as we were given a room which was extremely hot. It would’ve been better to sleep in the corridor. No other comment has mentioned this issue before, so I think is worth pointing it out. The room gets direct sunlight most of the day and on top of that, the hotel has a central temperature control set to heating at this time of the year, so it felt as if we were sleeping in a beach hotel. The room had a window and we were given a fan by the front desk, but it didn’t do much of a difference. Upon complaint and trip.com customer service intervention, we were offered a different room facing the other side of the road for the second night. This room was a completely different story and we were able to sleep soundly. Also worth pointing out that the front desk didn’t offer to change our room the first night when we brought this issue to their attention. So it’s not as easy as other comments say to change your room if you are not satisfied with it, or maybe not being able to communicate correctly played a part (I don’t speak Chinese and the hotel staff doesn’t speak English). The breakfast was a highlight, at least according to the usual 3-4* Chinese hotel breakfast we’ve experienced. It also included more options that suit the western taste. Of course, you will have plenty of tasty Chinese options such as noodles, soup wontons, or pork buns, but also bread, croissants, lots of fruit, cakes, eggs, salad. Choose the time you go the breakfast restaurant carefully though. 7:00am was empty, 9:00am was packed. Location wise, it’s right in front of a metro station and central railway station. We arrived and departed from the East Railway Station, and the location was still very handy (7 metro stops from the East Railway Station on line 1, 2 metro stops from the West Lake, about 8 metro stops and one transfer from the Cirque du Soleil theater, 7min walk to Wuliu Alley for a peaceful 10min stroll along the river that leads you to Hefang Street). Didi was very cheap too. Never paid more than 6$, even in peak hours. Overall, if you get a room where you can sleep comfortably, it’s...
Read moreSpent a few days visiting Hangzhou. It's across street from the old train station with two subway lines. While it's within "walking" distance from the West Lake, it's quite a walk (over 20 minutes for me including waiting for traffic lights). But it's 2-3 subway stops (5-6 minutes) away from various locations along the south end of the West Lake. Even I stayed in hotels right next to the West Lake, this hotel is in a much more continent location. ||It's about 20 minutes to the Hangzhou East Station (the main high speed rail station) or 50 minutes to the airport (30 min taxi) by subway directly (no transfers). ||That said, given it's next to the train station, it's quite challenging for drivers. Taxi drivers are fine but even locals were confused with so many exit/on ramps. ||It occupies about 1/3 of the floors in a high rise office building (shared with another hotel and commercial offices) with dedicated entrance and elevators. I never had to wait long for the elevators. The rooms are reasonable for a hotel in a major city like Hangzhou. The facilities are well maintained and functional. ||The staff are courteous, capable, and professional. They like their job and do it well. While the hotel may be considered a 3-star (by US standards), I'd rate it a 4-star especially considering the service level. ||The breakfast on the top floor is the high point of my stay (pun intended). Good selections in its buffet and made to order items. The view on the terrace is absolutely priceless. ||In the evening hours, the top floor converts into a bar with unique selections from local brewers. My favorite is the Longjing Tea flavored lager. ||After staying in over five different hotels in Hangzhou, this is the one for...

We are a family of four and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Jing’an while in Shanghai, which we enjoyed, so we decided to book the Holiday Inn Express Hangzhou Westlake East for our trip to Hangzhou. Our stay in Hangzhou was only for one night, and we rented two rooms. Unfortunately, one of the rooms had a cigarette smell (likely from a previous guest), so we informed the reception and asked to move rooms.
The receptionist initially mentioned that all rooms of the same standard were occupied and that a staff member would be sent to investigate. However, she called me back within seconds and said they had found another room for us. To our pleasant surprise, we were given an upgraded room!
While the hotel itself is older, we felt it was great value for the price. We were especially impressed with the customer service and how quickly they resolved the issue, as it was crucial for us due to my kids’ sensitivity to smoke.
A special mention to a staff member, Tiki Wei, who assisted us during check-out. While I’m not sure if she was the one who made the decision to move us or if it was another staff member, her professionalism and care left a positive impression.
The hotel’s location is very convenient—right across from the station, just two stops from West Lake (Xihu). There are restaurants downstairs, and the hotel breakfast was excellent, with attentive staff.
Thank you, Holiday Inn Express, for a pleasant stay. We would happily return the next time we...
