Overall our experience with the hotel is great - facilities, staff, food, restaurants especially the music night at the lobby lounge and the good service and food at the Summer Palace Chinese restaurant.
The only thing which unfortunately came as a very bad experience was the 3rd night during our stay when we got off from taxi at the main entrance of the hotel. We went back to hotel after dinner by taxi, and when we arrived there was no way the taxi could get close to the entrance, because of construction work. There was absolutely no sign for both cars or pedestrians how to get in. We were forced to get off the taxi in the middle of the road, and the construction trucks were huge and moving so quickly and almost hit on us. We jumped to the back of the taxi to avoid being hit, at the same time stopped the taxi from leaving. It was very dangerous because of the big trucks moving around, the traffic on the road with other cars, and the darkness of the entrance area. During our move we even inevitably stepped onto the area with wet wax (bitumen). Our shoes became sticky and dirty and later after we went back we realized there was no way to clean it and had to throw them away. At the end, we managed to get back onto the same taxi, forced the taxi driver to go around the hotel and finally stopped somewhere that we saw a pavement and we had to then walk back.
We were quite disappointed at how an international 5-star hotel did not give any notice to its customers that there would be major construction work that impact them on going out/getting back to hotel. Also, there should be at least clear sign to tell taxi/customers on how to go to alternative entrance if the main one is blocked. At minimum there could be someone who could have instructed the traffic there, instead of having ourselves almost got hit by truck with our shoes all becoming messy and could just be screaming there. It eventually became quite a scary night for us and we did spend a great deal of time to settle and wash ourselves after getting back...
ย ย ย Read moreWell, what can I say? The best hotel we've stayed at in Qingdao. The fantastic 5-star guest service started from the bellhop till check out. Upon check in, I queued at wrong counter but was politely directed by an attendant towards the left valley wing counter. While waiting, the hotel attendant asked for our passports to photocopy which saved us time. The receptionist, Una Li was quick and didn't waste any minute. She also gave a small token to our boys and gave us a free room upgrade to Suite which was unexpected! Cleanliness in the room was top notch. I also love the fragrant smell while walking around especially in the hallways. A few minutes after we've settled in our suite, they sent us a fruit platter. Swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna were very clean as well as in the changing room; very well organized. I haven't seen a single hair on the floor! The swimming pool receptionist gave my boys yogurt before and after swimming which was a very nice gesture. The gym is big and clean as well. There's also a great selection for breakfast in that nice and cozy hall in the 20th floor, where you can enjoy part of the ocean view. Food was great and as expected of a five-star hotel. We spent a night here with our two boys to relax, have fun, and celebrate our wedding anniversary. I didn't even bother to try the massage because of how relaxed I've felt already just from the whole atmosphere in this place. But I'd love to try the massage next time. I've felt like every where you go, everybody is there wearing a smile and ready to help. Being surrounded by well-trained and professional staff who are eager to give their guests a quality hotel stay is worth paying the big bucks. And before I forget, thanks to the manager for helping us sort out things with our booking agent. Thank you again to all the staff of Shangrila for giving us an...
ย ย ย Read moreThis is definitely a 5 star hotel and we would recommend it for location and service, the only problem we had was at check in when we arrived at 4pm and were told that our room wasnโt ready and it would be another 1 hour to 1 and a half hour away, which was totally unacceptable as check in is at 3pm, the lady tried to upsell us to another room, not a free upgrade but to charge us the extra, I thought this was not on and as we had been travelling all day since 4am that morning, our room should have been ready, after we refused the upsell, suddenly told there is a room available in about 20 minutes but on a lower floor than we requested, we were still not happy and then suddenly another room appeared, also not on a high floor, we decided to take it as we were so tired, when we got to the room, it was not in a good viewing position, had a wall outside the window, we went back downstairs and this time I asked for the manager, Jack came to look after us and finally understood us, gave us a drink voucher and we sat in the lovely lounge area and had an ice cold drink and within 10-15 minutes Jack had gotten us a higher floor(as we had originally requested anyway) and helped us to our room, the view was uninterrupted and the room much better, Jack also sent some beers to our room to enjoy and was very apologetic, thank you Jack for your help. I didnโt want to write anything negative here because this is a lovely hotel and the Shangri-La group is normally very good, we have stayed many times in different places but I just had to mention that part because I donโt want other people who have been travelling all day to arrive and their room isnโt ready and to be told to wait longer its just not right. Everything else went smoothly and the facilities are great, swimming pool, location, cleanliness. Thanks again to...
