"The customer is always wrong:" a very common complaint amongst foreigners here in Colombia. Go to a nice steakhouse and the meat turns out completely raw? Too bad, you shouldn't have ordered it medium. Your apartment has roaches and the water get turned off every time it rains (it rains a lot in Colombia)? Too bad, you shouldn't have stayed here knowing it rains and that roaches exist in Colombia

Grupo Benago carries on this Colombian tradition with how they handle issues. I have lived in Colombia for almost 2 years now, and i've stayed in probably 30-40 different locations during this time. While Grupo Benago hasn't been literally the worst experience, they have certainly been a strong candidate.

My first stay with them included an apartment full of maybe 40+ roaches. This was a rental made through AirBNB. They sent someone out to fumigate and clean the place, so, while this was inconvenient and gross, I didn't want to leave a bad review. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. Upon my return to the exact same unit a few weeks later, the roaches appeared again, along with a whole host of other issues. The water in the unit gets turned off every time it rains, so, if you go out with your girlfriend at night and it starts to rain, you can kiss your shower goodbye before going to bed. You'll also want to avoid using the bathroom as whatever you leave in the toilet will stay there throughout the night. On top of these issues, the bathroom sink would completely back up any time we used it, which required a visit from a plumber to fix the issue.

We ended up leaving 3 days early (of a 10-day stay I believe) to get away from these re-occuring issues. The host didn't want to reemburse us anything for the 3 nights we wouldn't be there, and we had to fight to get a credit of 2 nights. Fast forward a couple months when I was planning to be back in Armenia and they suddenly changed their policy that the credit could only apply to a 1-month stay.

Sadly, this type of experience isn't too uncommon in Colombia. I love living here and will continue to invite friends/family to experience this beautiful country, but at the same time I will continue to warn them of the very anti-consumer policies which really annoy foreigners (and locals too i'm sure).
