The lady running Hostal Palogrande is a lovely lady who will make you feel at home, help you out with your traveling plans and do everything she can to help you out. The ladies cleaning the house are also super-nice. I just wish she put a little bit more effort in the furnishing of the rooms. First of all, if you want to get some quality sleep, you should ask for one of the rooms downstairs. The rooms upstairs are fairly small , especially when they fit 2 beds in them and look more like military barracks. The mattresses are basically a little bit thicker than the a toothpaste box (seriously) and they are foam mattresses so I had a backache all the time I spent there. The 2 rooms on the first floor facing the front windows, where the kitchen is, are right off the street so you can hear every single thing going on out there, including the TV in the restaurant downstairs. These 2 rooms were basically one bigger roo that was separated by what looks like a paper wall, I mean you can literally stick your hand between the 2 rooms, so there isn't much privacy and you can basically hear the people in the ¨next¨ room breathe. They are also attached to the main common area so if there are guests in the house you will hear their every single move no matter how hard they try at being quiet. When I first walked in (because this is another place that will tell you that everything is booked when in fact, if you stop by, you'll find out that is not so), she showed me a different, bigger room downstairs, then when I moved in she put me into one of those upstairs because she had a big group of people coming. for the same price. The good thing about this place is that it's super clean (bathroom, shower, kitchen etc..) and it could not be in a better location, I mean you can find everything you need (banks, Internet, restaurants) literally downstairs (which helps a lot especially during rainy season). A little more space in the rooms would be nice as well as a little lamp, as the neon light can have a ghostly feeling, especially at night. This is a good place if you care about location first and foremost and if you want something very affordable that is not a hostel. Like I said the lady running the place is lovely. And wi-fi did work all the time I was there. If you get a chance to stop by, aske to see the rooms and stick the the room you agreed on. If you can't, ask for a...
Read moreAfter some research I found this hostal to have the best location among hostales in Manizales. The hostal is located a stone’s throw away from the main university/nightlife zone of the city. Walking a half block to a neighborhood of upscale high rise buildings to the hostal sure beats walking 15 minutes back to the hostal. Also the second floor deck is great for drinking coffee, working on the computer and people watching. Maria Theresa is a host that has been in the hospitality industry in Manizales for almost 20 years. She is super friendly, and you can tell that she really cares that her guests enjoy their stay. The hostal offers all private to semi-private rooms. The rooms are small because of the hostal’s prime real estate location, but you get large private closets with locks! Dorm rooms at other hostals are cheaper; however, if private to semi-private rooms are a must – this hostal is an economical option. What else? The hostal includes daily visits from the cooking and cleaning staff, morning breakfast, a daily cleaning regimen, and hot water than can be adjusted to being too hot to touch (if that suits you) in 4 of the 5 restrooms. Also, very important for me, the hostal has the fastest Internet service at a consistent 1O+ Mbps that I’ve experienced in any hostal in Latin America. I thoroughly enjoyed my 30 day stay at...
Read moreAll the rooms here are private, single or double. Theres a good kitchen that you can use, some cute commnal areas and a balcony to smoke or people watch. The bathrooms are shared, but very clean, the showers were not hot, but warm and that was fine for me. Beds are quite big and very comfy with warm douvets and blankets. Everything is very clean and comfy. The hostess is very lovely and helpful in every way, she even organised for me to go together with others to a nearby cafe finca so I didnt have to pay for a taxi by myself. The only thing is that she doesnt speak English, but I got by with my basic Spanish. The walls of the rooms are quite thin, but theres good wifi all around, plugs in the rooms and a large lockable cupboard for all your valuables. You also get a key for the room and front door. The breakfast is included and was very good.||||Note - during the Feria in the first 2 weeks of January, the prices of all hostels including this one double, check before you book...
