The Cantamar Beach Hostel. — Hotel in Santa Marta

It has all the commodities expected in a hostel with some plusses.

As a hostel, you won't expect much attention to the details, but they keep it neat, in general.

The room was comfortable, with AC, clean sheets every day, own toilet and shower (which was huge). We stayed in a three-bed room, which was separated by a door giving some privacy, in case it was needed.

You feel almost like you have your private beach as it is kind of secluded. For that same reason do not expect to have everything close. After all, if you are travelling to Santa Marta you are going to walk around a lot.

The hostel staff was really nice, welcoming, helpful and friendly. That said, the restaurant staff (who I think might be external to the hostel) was not such. But that's sort of the feeling I got from every restaurant in the city. That's why I don't give them lower grade.

There were two consecutive weddings that limited access to a short area, but wasn't that big of a problem.

The pool, I never got to used it as it always had some trash in it. Looked dirty, but anyway, I'm not a big pool user. Why a pool when you have the sea.

The restaurant open for breakfast quite late (8:00) and doesn't have much variation. They serve the basics, and I usually go for the typical of the region, from which they only serve "Arepa'e huevo". Never ate lunch there, so I can't say if it was any good, but is kind of the same they serve anywhere in town: meat, chicken or fish with rice, plantain and sallad.

In general, many parts of Santa Marta have not access to water supply, which can cause that the hostel runs out of water anytime. This happen to us twice. They get water from a tank truck, which can be late or maybe it is just bad planning.

We spend NYE at the hostel. They offered a dinner which was totally OK. Not good, not bad, just OK. Welcome drinks, starters, buffet with chicken or meatloaf, wine and grapes for the NY.

There wasn't much party, but again it was not their fault. There was a private wedding at the ground floor (who marries on NYE?) and the music was divided... A who-plays-louder competition. We got to see some fireworks by the beach which was superb .

In summary, are you looking for a place close to the sea, quiet, far from the crowded city, affordable and you're open to walk further for other facilities. This might...

Desde el comienzo vi venir una tormenta con este lugar, pero no sabía muy bien cómo sería. Cuando fui a hacer la reserva en Booking solicitaba tarjeta de crédito, no es algo que maneje así que les escribí para ver otra opción de pago y tardaron en responder como un día. Me resigné e intenté reservar en otro lugar, pero queríamos algo cerca de la playa y esa era la única opción cómoda para pagar. Así que por fin logré que me dieran la información, me dieron un link y un número de cuenta, así que preferí hacer el pago a la cuenta por seguridad y tardaron 5 días en responder, ahí me puse a ver los comentarios terribles que tienen por todas partes y me asusté. Finalmente me confirmaron la reserva, se llegó el día del viaje y esto fue lo que encontré: La persona que estaba en la noche nos atendió sin ánimo, nos dio la llave y en efecto como los demás usuarios dijeron hay que subir escaleras, no nos tomó por sorpresa por eso. Sin embargo, no estaba impecable el piso del baño estaba mojado, todos los muebles parecían golpeados, aquí viene lo chistoso alquilamos una habitación "Deluxe", la cama doble son dos camas sencillas pegadas con la sábana 🤣🤣, eso sí me sorprendió. Al otro día al ir a desayunar me enteré que el desayuno no venía incluido, la señora del restaurante estaba algo molesta con mi expresión, así que ni nos preguntó cómo queríamos los huevos, no los sirvió como quiso. En general la comida es buena, no es caro a comparación de otros lados, tienen buen sazón. Lo que vale la pena es la ubicación y la vista, se ve gente peligrosa pero cuando uno camina hacia la zona de los turistas casi no hay vendedores ni gente, imagino que es la época. Es lo que hace que uno se aguante tantos inconvenientes en el hospedaje. Uno puede notar que en la recepción y en general el personal que trabaja ahí, hace las cosas de manera diferente, unos son muy amables y organizados, otros borran tooodo el esfuerzo de los demás y el resultado son clientes molestos como yo. El aseo en general de la piscina, áreas comunes y habitaciones es muy regular, hacen la limpieza a veces muy tarde. En una de esas casi pierdo mi brassier porque lo echaron a lavar con sábanas y todo 😕, no estaba sucio ni nada, se llama descuido. La gente se queja de que los han robado, así que trasteamos nuestras cosas de valor todo el tiempo, las chapas de las habitaciones son inseguras y da una sensación de desconfianza terrible. Todo los anotan en papelitos y luego lo contabilizan, me parece que todo debería estar digitalizado desde un inicio. Deberían implementar el auto servicio si no les agrada atender a la personas y dejar una cocina disponible para que la gente prepare la comida como hacer otros hostels, y así con todo. Lo recomiendo para la gente que va por diversión y está dispuesta a soportar uno que otro descache, si solo quieren descansar...

It's amazing, like really really amazing. The hostel has its own private beach area where you can take good pictures of the sunset, has a bar where they serve good cocktails and they even have a happy hour 2x1 in every liquor. Customer service is good and attentive the hotel also has a pool indoors and offers many excellent tours (you should take the boat trip if you can) It's a good place to relax and forget about the silly civilization.

The only two cons I can think of is that right now there is no elevator so if you have a lot of luggage don't pick one of the rooms in upper floors unless you want to workout those arms haha And the second is that they currently don't offer lunch or dinner just breakfast. It's not bad but might be dealbreaker for some.
