We stayed in lost boys for nine nights and absolutely loved this place. We stayed in a private cabin, which was perfect. The fan is super powerful for those hot, sticky nights, the room is huge (and we can certainly spread out!), and the attached bathroom is half open so you’re undercover but enjoying the open Costa Rican air. They’ve thought of everything, from bedside lights to rope clotheslines under the roof eves in the bathroom for swimmers and towels to dry.
The kitchen is huge and the three fridges mean there’s always space. There’s only two burners and no toaster (because people keep breaking them) so it can be a bit of a squish in the kitchen but just need a bit of patience.
The staff really make this place! The part owner, Dennis, is such a delight and we were incredibly sad to leave him. He has so much knowledge about the area that he shares so freely and is a joy to be around. Matteo is such a fun and friendly dude and can always build a good bar vibe. The bar also closes at 11pm, and if you want you can go party elsewhere. This was a great combo of everyone drinking together and then going out, but people who wanted to sleep absolutely could.
We went in the wet season, so the kitchen was closed except for breakfast, and the bar is mostly closed (they have beers and basic spirits but aren’t running a full menu). This is totally understandable with the seasons but something to just be aware of, although there are plenty of food places nearby. There’s a lot of comments about the breakfast but wet season may be a bit different- it alternates between a bowl of fruit and a traditional Costa Rican breakfast (rice and beans, a fried egg, and plantain), with a bowl of fruit and a crepe on Sundays. We found we needed to supplement the breakfast but gets you started.
We had a great stay, watching monkies in the trees from the pool (which is a great pool- always in shade and many different levels to lounge on in the water), and watching iguanas jump out of the trees and on to the roof of the bar. Absolutely loved this place and would...
Read moreWe were a couple who stayed in cabin (bungalow) no. 1 for 4 nights.||||The start was promising - Sarah, with whom we talked on the phone and booked our stay was very kind and informative.||||The ROOM:||||Exactly as advertised.||The room isn't big, but contains a large bed and a fridge.||The private bathroom (toilets and bathroom) are adjacent to the bungalow, so you have to get out of the bungalow in order to enter them.||||Only problem was a bad scent of sewer which was present every now and then.||||Wi-Fi was TERRIBLE.||We saw other reviews which complained about the Wi-Fi, but we didn't imagine how.||Even though they have 4 different networks, there were times none of them worked.||In the room (and in most of the facility) there's NO CELLPHONE SIGNAL, so keep that in mind.||||The restaurant/bar:||||Good food and drinks, really friendly staff.||If you stay here it is recommend to eat over there (though there's not much variety of dishes).||BREAKFAST WAS OK - basic, but it was pretty tasty.||||||And now the REASON to the LOW RATING - the STAFF:||||During the check in, which was done by another receptionist (not Sarah from the phone), we were only shown where our room was, and when & where breakfast was served.||||She did not tell us anything about the restaurant operating in the place, nor it's opening hours (which caused an unfortunate event - when we found out on a rainy Sunday night that it was apparently CLOSED on Sundays).||||Even though it wasn't a busy time, she didn't give us any useful information regarding our stay in Santa Teresa, which we expected as it was our 5th stop in CR. ||||In addition, when we asked other guys at the reception (again, not Sarah) about tours and transportation, they gave us partial information which led to inconveniences.||||To conclude, it seems like some part of the staff does not do it's best in order for you to have your best stay in Santa Teresa (and we would like to thank Sarah which did her best).||||WE CANNOT RECOMMEND this place as we...
Read moreI spent a total of 6 weeks at Lost Boyz Hostel, specifically in the Nomads dorm with 6 beds, and I had an amazing time. What truly sets this hostel apart are the people, especially the staff on-site. They are not just friendly, helpful, and in good spirits; they genuinely care about the guests. Whether it was sharing meals together at the hostel table, giving a quick ride to the ATM, assisting with phone repairs, translating emails, or arranging spontaneous shuttles, Santiago, Jesus, Cesar, Ian, and Matteo are simply fantastic. They are undoubtedly the reason I ended up staying at this hostel for so long, and it felt like home.
Apart from the exceptional staff, the hostel itself is well-maintained, boasts a great pool, and includes breakfast (which is quite significant, especially considering the prices in Santa Teresa). Matteo, the hostel manager, is always open to feedback and goes above and beyond to address any reasonable concerns or suggestions (missing spoons were back in stock in a matter of hours :-D ). The hostel's location is also excellent; it's close to the main beach entrance (next to eat streets) and conveniently near surf and ATV shops (like Extreme Surf Center), the "Ronnie's" supermarket, and a laundry service.
Regarding the atmosphere, most of the rooms do not have AC, but the beds typically come with their own fans. The layout of the house is very open, almost like sharing a massive house with friends. During the weeks I was there (off-season), it was fantastic. I can't speak to the noise levels during the high season, but the security was quite strict after 11 PM :-D.
In summary, Lost Boyz Hostel offers a welcoming and warm family-like atmosphere, thanks to its exceptional staff members, and I can highly recommend it. I already...
