Look at the place in person prior to booking. We booked online because the photos of the place looked very unique and nice. However when we got there the room was not cleaned well. The pillows were old and stained, the sheets were unwashed, there was mold on the ceiling of the bathroom. Overall the place looked abandoned. There was a window in the shower? Not sure why, it was not a window looking to the outside it was looking to a boiler room of some sort, that was a little scary. The front desk guy was very polite and tried to help us with getting another room but the second room was a little better but not by much. It was still moldy and the sheets were not washed. Pillows were gross. The only other option the receptionist gave us was to upgrade to another room but we had to pay more. At that point after seeing two different very dirty rooms we opted to just leave. I did not feel comfortable sleeping there. The owner of the hotel does not give refunds and from what we heard sometimes they refund you the money sometimes they don’t. We decided to take our chances as we were not happy with the rooms. We thankfully booked with booking which helped us receive a full refund. We aren’t super picky when it comes to hotels, the place looked cute on the photos, but in person it was very disappointing. It needs more love. I don’t think changing the pillows or washing the sheets is that crazy of a cost. They really need to do better! Staff was friendly and helpful but it sounds like the owner is cheap and not keeping up with the maintenance of the place.

Really love this boutique hotel! It’s larger than you think, it’s on sprawling grounds and there are several small buildings with guest rooms which comprise the overall property — the architectural design is so beautiful, the terracotta roofs and stone and colors are just so picturesque and exotic. It’s very lush with vegetation and the ambient noise of the birds and bugs is melodic. Beware when you arrive there’s a long driveway up to the property from the main and busy road. The staff are lovely though the front desk rep spoke little English, but tried her best. As an affordable place to stay the room is obviously a bit unstuffy and not the most modern or sophisticated setup. But it’s charming and has all basic functions working properly, and it is cozy. Breakfast is served at a somewhat small window of time, 7-9am. The neighbourhood of San Pedro is charming and safe. I’d stay here again on a future visit to San Jose!

I picked this hotel because I had stayed here twice before in years past, for work. The Organization for Tropical Studies uses this hotel because of its great location. I was happy on those visits. My current stay is HORRIBLE because they put me in the newer house which is closer to the driveway (I hear people going in and out and talking loudly), nearer to the street (where I can hear traffic, especially the airbrakes on the trucks late at night -- the racket is impressive), and has really frustratingly unreliable WIFI. If they try to put you in the new house by the street, just cancel your visit. The new house is also next to the Cracovia cafe on the street. This restaurant/bar is run by the sons of the owner of Ave Paraiso. Tonight, they started live music at 10PM, and I need to work tomorrow. I know sometimes hotels in the city have noisy neighbors , but here the very same owners run the hotel AND create the noise. I am sure the main house is still quite, no traffic noise, no concerts, but I don-t think I will every stay here again if I don-t have a clear guarantee of what room I will be in. This is a shame, because I have a long history with...

I stayed one night (was going to reserve a second one, but I didn't), I got there super tired and ready for my good first night of sleep in about a week... it was a failure.||||Internet speed was terrible (the moments I was able to connect) so I had to spend all my phone data credit to upload work documents, when I was finally done and ready to sleep a noisy couple next door (that definitely were having a better night than me) ruined. The rooms are not private and you can hear your other guests sleeping, talking, etc.||||On the morning, I had a work meeting so I asked the staff about the internet, to what they reply "it always work, try logging again", no solutions were given. I ended up paying Parking and coffee to get access to internet in a restaurant near by. ||||I used to send all my work guests there, not anymore. Just realized it is like said in other comments, an overpriced hostel.||||Summary: Noisy rooms, terrible wifi....
