On first impression Apartamentos El Castillo seems a pretty good deal. Price and location score it high marks if you are looking for accommodation close to the local action. In the heart of San Jose's student quarter, with its rowdy bars and nightlife. ||Finding anywhere in Costa Rica is of course always a sport given the lack of street names, but. If you are coming east along the main road and you look out for the bright neon sign of the Jazz Cafe you've just passed your turn. Go back and take the first right and the apartments are the first building on your right. There is street parking right outside (not sure if we should have paid...we didn't and got away with it, but I think we should have used some sort of cashless app system).||Reception is big, bright and airy and the welcome is friendly.||So far, so good.||Now we only stayed one brief night as a stopover in the city, so this isn't a comprehensive review, but what I would stress is that this isn't the place for you if you are disturbed by the sounds of the city - or for that matter the sounds coming from any of the other rooms. Although we'd been travelling for almost 24 hours we still got woken every hour or so by trucks, loud TVs, and random bangs from somewhere downstairs at 4am. The thin creaking bed didn't help much.||On the upside we had a small private balcony with an great view (although the steep stairs to the top of the building might be an issue for the less-mobile traveller) and the room itself was large, nicely decorated and had a good kitchenette and decent enough bathroom.||So on balance, avoid this one if you are a light sleeper who values their undisturbed slumber. ||But if you are the sort of person who can sleep through a thunderstorm and you want bustling nightlife on your doorstep why not...
Read moreWasn't really a fan of this place. There wasn't much atmosphere or a friendly vibe. It felt more like a (dead) hostel than a hotel. I was in a room with six bunk beds, just for me. This wasn't very comfortable (you can't sit up properly on a lower bunk) and I could see hairs on most of the blankets. The food was not good - breakfasts were always too salty and dinners were rarely fresh - the uneven heating was a give away! I wouldn't go back to this place. Hostel Urbano which is nearby has had great reviews from friends and actually looks quite nice - that's what I would recommend to...
