The Amadria Gardenija Hotel experienced an emergency, so we were effortlessly re-booked into their sister hotel Amadria Park Grand Hotel while enroute. The front office manager of the Gardenija Hotel, Vedran B. went above and beyond to not only assist, but correct a mishap that occurred while we checked in and even offered a complimentary dinner at their restaurant Osteria da Ugo. We already had visited that restaurant earlier and enjoyed our dinner there, so we declined to try something different. We did share complimentary espresso and a chat towards the end of our stay.
The hotel itself is perfectly located along the promenade and shares a parking garage with Amadria's other properties. We found complimentary water and chocolate in the room with a personalized note, which was appreciated. The hotel itself is heavily trafficked, so certain aspects of the room appeared worn and require updating, painting and upgrading, but it's old charm was not lost. The elevator area has an almost Art Deco look (Photos) but the hallways are in need of an uplift, so does the exterior. Parking garage costs were 20 Euro a day, waived for us as a parting gift. The garage and spaces are a bit narrow and at times two-lane, causing a conundrum at times for guests.
I am not sure if the on-site restaurant Camellia is part of the Amadria Group, but it is perhaps my primary concern about this hotel. The restaurant hosts a dinner and breakfast buffet (Not sure about lunch), but nothing really stood out and I am sad to say, the experience was average. The dining room is beautiful. The staff was friendly, but the waiters ignored my family consistently and appeared to focus on others, re-filling complimentary drinks several times literally in front of us. This happened consistently during the one dinner and both times for breakfast. I even left a few Euros in the hopes this would change, but to no avail.
I am also a coffee lover and the automated machine just did not provide me with a coffee that I would enjoy. I certainly expected a barista making that all important coffee for its guests. We ended up visiting a coffee shop further in town to get our coffee fix. Most of the cooked food (roast, burger patties, even the rice) was dry and the marinated herring just old. The bread was stale and the cold cuts and cheeses underwhelming. The pastries were ok, but the the donuts hard. The Sacher Torte was not moist or necessary. Perhaps brought in from Vienna, Austria, so not local. Croatia has plenty of wonderful pastries that I hoped for.
However, what keeps this hotel and other Amadria properties ticking are their staff. Not only local employees, but the seasonal workers from the Philippines as well. Without exception, all were extremely polite and helpful. From Vedran to Srdana, Petar, Ana of Hotel Royal and the entire Grand Hotel front desk, everyone went above and beyond to rectify their original mishap and make us feel not only comfortable, but genuinely welcome as well. Therefore, my combined rating is Four...
Read moreWorst Place in Opatija. Super unfriendly! AVOID!!!
Me and my wife wanted to enjoy fine dining with caviar and champagne at a great place with a nice beach view.
We came here as it looked great from the outside and we received a unpleasant experience.
We got reseated 2 times(!!!)
We arrived, sat down and as we told the waiter we would like to have dinner, he said it is not possible in this area and guided us to another table, where we could have dinner.
After a Time, a waiter from this "area" arrived and asked what we would like to order (without receiving a menu or anything). As i said we would like to have the menu please, because we would like to eat something, he said it is not possible here and we would have to go to another area.
I told him that another waiter just seated us specially here to eat. The Waiter said that the other waiter has no idea and he is wrong. I then asked him why on the table next to us is food and he said "That is special" (!!!) So i asked him if we are not special?
He said "everybody is special" and pleased us to go to another area, where we could eat. He didn't even brought us there, he just told us "That table over there". So we went there for the 3. Try to finally eat something in this place.
After a time, a waiter came and again without having a menu or anything we got asked what we would like to order. I said we would like to eat something and would like to have the menu. He said, okay, I'll organise the menu. Finally, we hold a menu in the hand and were ready to order. Now what happened then? We waited and waited and nobody came to take our order.
We just left this worse place then. We then went to Restaurant "ANGIOLINA" right next to it, where we received great food and got treated beautifully and nice, how it should be. There is also a better view, too.
This Place is the worst and unfriendliest place in Opatija and the worst experience we had in our completely Croatia trip. NEVER expierenced...
Read moreThis is a lovely hotel to stay in right opposite Opatija harbour in Kvarner Bay. The reception staff are all amazing. Ultra professional and so friendly with it. They are so helpful for any query/concern. We stayed in Villa Camellia with a sea view and the room was very comfortable with a small balcony, perfect to sit in the sun with a good book. The restaurant was clean and had a really good selection of hot and cold food for breakfast and dinner. Drinks service could be a little slow as there didn't always appear to be enough servers. They also covered the reception bar at the same time as dinner so perhaps this needs to be addressed. |It would also be nice if tea and coffee were included after dinner rather than having to pay (a lot) extra at the bar. One waiter clearly did not want to bother himself with a cup of tea - brought Earl Grey when we asked for English Breakfast, (because he couldn't find it) then offered both Jasmine and Green tea as 'they are excellent quality and taste better.' That's as maybe but we ordered what we ordered as we don't like the alternatives! He then said he didn't have time to look for it as he had other guests to see to. It did get sorted - eventually - with the help of other staff.||Special mention to Alex, one of the servers. She was genuinely happy and friendly and did her utmost despite being rushed off her feet.||We had a small issue with insects in the room, but again reception were straight on to housekeeping and it was resolved very quickly. A couple of the housekeeping staff didn't appear to do much but on the whole they were very thorough.||We used the wellness spa which was almost deserted on the day we went but seemed popular at other times - although the wellness pool could do with being turned up just a few degrees but that's just my personal preference.||On the whole we had a really good time, despite the weather, which made us appreciate the hotel...
