I visited Spindleruv Mlyn in January for some snowboarding. Travel agent had few accommodation options, most of them quite expensive. I choose the cheapest one, which was about 30 USD/day and turned out to be Pension Katty. Considering its relatively low price, the accommodation itself was satisfactory, with cozy interiors and prompt service. However, other factors such as location crippled the vacation experience as a whole.||||Upsides are low price, clean rooms, nice furniture, separate ski room and friendly stuff. Downsides are much more numerous:||||* Terrible location. This ruins everything. The pension is 3 km far from town center (read shops and restaurants), 1 km far from nearest ski lift, 1/2 km far from ski bus stop. 500 meters may not sound like a long distance, but try walking 500 m over a literally frozen road in full snow gear carrying your snowboard or ski. It's gonna take up to 20 minutes and some sore feet. And you'll have to do it at least twice a day.||||Anytime you want to go skiing, shopping, eating, you'll need to make a long walk in below-freezing environment. Anytime you need to buy anything, you have to leave the pension for freezing cold of the outside: the few shops of Spindleruv Mlyn are all located in the town center (if it's appropriate to call this tiny village a town), and only buildings around Pension Katty are a couple of other hotels.||||Alternatives are hiring a taxi (which is unreasonably expensive and can cost you as much as one day's accommodation) or traveling by your own car (which can be quite dangerous on frozen roads and barriers you from tasting fine Czech beer for dinner).||||* Ski bus schedule. Ski bus only runs once per hour and what's worse, it stops by 16.00. If you've missed the bus, you are screwed. This means your last run has to be before 14.30 if you are sking at Medvedin or before 15.00 (still absurdly early!) if you are skiing at Hromovka or Plan, while all the smart people who stay in hotels and pensions near ski lifts can continue as long as ski lifts work.||||* No restaurant. You'll need a good diner and supper after a day on a slope. You can't get that at Katty. They only serve breakfast. You cannot order anything in the afternoon. You'll have to go out for dinner every day. And don't forget it means taking a long walking tour. The only eatery nearby is Hotel Esprit's restaurant. All other bars and restaurants are 1 to 3 km away.||||* No bar or lounge. There's no place to drink coffee or beer (you cannot order any of these after the breakfast anyway), watch a movie or socialize with other guests. Might be okay if you are traveling with a family and not interested in chatting with any other people. With no restaurant or lounge and tiny rooms there’s nothing to do here but sleep.||||* Poor breakfast. Breakfast served only included bread, cheese, dry cereals, milk, tea and coffee. There was an omlet once, but just once. Definitely not enough when you are doing snow sports.||||* No laundry service. Neither in the pension itself, nor anywhere near there was a laundry service, which is a must when you go skiing every day. Pension stuff sent me to a camping site near Medvedin for laundry service.||||* Poor heating. Heating only works for few hours in the night. It's not even enough to fully dry your clothes after a day of skiing.||||* WiFi disconnects every 10 minutes or so. Not such a big deal, but I guess I should mention it.||||Bottom line: While I fully understand that pension owners can do nothing about most turn-offs such as poor location, I still can't recommend this place. Only stay here if you are a family of teetotalers on a strict budget and travel by car. Better spend more on a pension with a restaurant...
Read moreThe word hospital comes from the Latin hospitalis, meaning “hospitable” or “related to guests.” This, in turn, derives from hospes, which could mean both “guest” and “host.” Unfortunately, Mrs. Ewa at the guesthouse was not hospital towards us—she did not show us any hospitality.
Her behavior and comments made us feel uncomfortable. On the contrary—we felt like we were constantly being judged and watched. She often reprimanded guests, made passive-aggressive comments “into the air” without a clear addressee, sighed when someone made a second cup of coffee, counted how many drinks we had already prepared, and pointed out that a child had placed their bottle in the “wrong” spot. All of this gave the impression that she simply did not like people and found guests bothersome.
Additionally, the only common area where one could sit with family, spend time, or play games was not always accessible, which surprised us a lot.
When we tried to share our feedback, instead of openness, we were met with a rude response—we were told that we were a “hopeless group.” Mrs. Ewa also claimed that she had “helped us so much” and recommended a ski school for children. However, it turned out that this school, Yellow Point, was run by her friends or family and provided very poor-quality services. We would not recommend it to anyone. This was not a heartfelt recommendation but simply favoritism.
In summary, the guesthouse is beautifully located, in a valley next to a stream. However, it is not the kind of place you return to with an open heart. It lacks warmth and hospitality, and instead of making the stay enjoyable, the host makes it difficult to...
