We stayed at Alsik for 3 nights in July 2020. Let us sum up: Would I stay at Alsik again? Yes, and I would heartily recommend it to anyone.
The Corona Situation – let us just get this out of the way. We stayed here during the pandemic, and at no point did we feel the hotel took the situation lightly. There was hand sanitizer everywhere, and efforts were made to enforce and encourage social distancing. It did make for some long queuing times for the elevators, but that is just how it had to be.
The Room – we had a corner room on the 10th floor, and really did not have any gripes about the room at all. The view was fantastic, the bed comfortable, and much to our joy his hotel has not fallen into that odd trend of putting the WC inside a glass cage. The pillows were not really to my preference, but you cannot have it all. I do think they are a bit stingy on the coffee capsules – there were only two of them.
The Food – we had breakfast included and had lunch in Alsik Restaurant our first day. For lunch we had their burger and their Caesar’s salad. The former was good but nothing to write home about. The salad on the other hand was fantastic and presented in an unusually interesting way for a Caesar’s salad. The breakfast was incredibly varied, and the staff were excellent in making sure nothing was ever empty. Their little breakfast quiches sat particularly well with me.
The Spa – we had the spa included in our stay and made use of it on two of the three days were stayed at Alsik. It is divided in two – the pool area and the “Nordic Spa”. The former we were quite enamored with. I do not know if it were because of the Corona virus, but there were limits to how many guests could be in the spa, so you had to book a 2-hour timeslot. It worked perfectly, the pool never felt crowded and it was very relaxing. I am not sure if children being disallowed is permanent, but I hope so, because it was a joy not to have screaming children around when trying to unwind. I do think a few improvements could be made. The storage lockers for example did not seem to work, and there were no instructions on how to use them and no staff available to ask. The jacuzzi also really needs some additional information. Its all well and good to know how deep and how warm the tub is, but the airflow is on a timer and guests cannot turn it off and on. We and numerous other guests tried in vain to look for a way to turn on the nozzles, but in the end realized it was on a timer. This really needs to be made apparent. Now for part two of the spa: The Nordic Spa. Here we had the exact opposite experience from the pool. We paid an additional charge to have access to the Nordic Spa, but we never got to use it any of it. It is far too small for the number of guest access sold. The steam rooms have a max of three occupants, there were only two footbaths, and so forth. I quite literally felt robbed after visiting this part of the spa, and if you choose to buy access, know that you may very well end up wasting the money, because it will be constantly occupied. Unless you want to use the entire 2-hour timeslot on queuing, you are probably not going to be able to snag a spot.
The View – the 16th floor of the hotel is a viewing deck, which is also open to the public. To the public however it closes rather early, but for guests you just ask for access at the reception desk, and you can go see the sunset/sunrise or the night lights over the harbor. Really a gorgeous feature of the Alsik Hotel.
Check-in/out – this was painless. We arrived early and stored our luggage while we had lunch and came back to fetch it once our room was ready. Upon departure we also stored our luggage, and the poor bellhop was new and apparently had not been informed how the luggage tags worked. Not an issue, just a chuckle worthy...
Read moreI had spontaniously booked this hotel for one night together with my girlfriend and out two tiny well-behaved dogs. We knew the hotel from seeing it whilst sailing to Sonderburg with our boat - so we thought it would be a lovely idea to spend one night there - as it also was my birthday the coning day. Being honest and open about being a dog-owner, i used the booking process on the original hotel website - adding our dogs to the booking. However, when we happily arrived at the lobby to check-in, things very very quickly turned sour. First of all we were not very friendlily welcomed - it was more feeling like a stone-cold process. When I got to ask for which kind of room we would be getting it was pointed out "um, since you only booked a standard room...." (by the way: this was my only choice, due to the dogs, I had to painfully learn a bit later....) ... We got: 4th floor (this hotel is a 30 story building overlooking the sound and the bay....)... and a view of the ugly car park. I asked if we could take a look first before checking-into something way below our idea... Then the guy at the reception told me in a very harsh manner and plenty of times "Sir!!! You have to sign here!".. this was followed by "Those are the rules" and "That is the policy". We were then told that our dogs are not so much welcome like their website is trying to tell us - Dogs would cause allergies and hence most of the rooms would not be for us. Only rooms are in the 4th and in the 10th floor - however, the 10th floor seemed fully booked - so they tried to push us in the very unattractive 4th floor with the most ugly view. The tone of the staff was super unfriendly and they made no effort to make us feel welcome, fairly-treated and at ease. There was no solution to this mess whatsoever. I saw my birthday treat turn into a sad and unfriendly chaos-trip with hosts that somehow misunderstood what a hotel stay is all about... I think the customer should be in the center of all things - and not their silly rules. The staff should not hide behind "policy" - but actively try to make us feel happy. The only star I am giving is, because they canclled everything free of cost. We then went to another Hotel ("Das James") in nearby Flensburg, where all of these troubles did not exist. There we were welcomed with true friendliness and nothing in such stupid manner was ever raised to us. First and last try to...
Read moreA beautiful new waterfront property which strives for the stars. Even the side rooms have a view. It was the high season and the hotel was fully booked, which may have attributed to minor hiccups in the service due to insufficient staffing. ||Although our room was a side room near back landside corner on the second floor we still had a reasonable river view. ||The 16th floor is an open viewing platform (Point of View) and provides a stunning 360 degree panoramic view of the area. A must visit. Go there after 7 p.m. when it only is open for the hotel guests. Entrance is free, get a key at the front desk.||Breakfast was excellent with a wide range of food, but strangely enough no orange juice. ||We didn't try the main restaurant, instead eating at the bar where the snacks were delicious and well presented. We didn't try the 17th story 1-starred Michelin restaurant.||Rooms are tastefully appointed, with motor-controlled elevation beds. One USB port is provided on each side of the bed and at the desk. Motion activated bedside floor lighting makes nighttime visits to the bathroom easy. But the bathroom lacks this feature. A half width sliding door between the bathroom and bed gives a choice of privacy or through-the-room outside views. However, the sliding door does not provide adequate sound proofing of flatulence. ||We also used the large, beautiful spa with sauna, pools, steam room etc. There are also two large outdoor whirlpools with a great river view. You must book a 3-hour slot in advance at a cost of 295 DKK per person. The spa café also provides light snacks, with healthy as well as alcoholic drinks.||The waterfront was also part of the third stage of Tour de France in 2022. It's a short walk along the waterfront to Sønderborg fortress, and in July you may see the royal yacht berthed there, since the queen regularly spends some time in the summer at Gråsten castle about 10 km west of Sønderborg. ||But do not expect over the top staffing and service with valet parking, bell hops to carry your baggage, a professional concierge desk and you might find at Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton. But it is a top-notch excellent hotel with a modern Danish minimalistic design,||I would probably consider this the best hotel in Denmark...
