Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna, Joensuu — Hotel in Joensuu sub-region

We stayed here while in Joensuu for the Biathlon World Cup in nearby Kontiolahti. On some of the other reviews, there were comments about the lack of character. Yes, it does lack this, but be honest - this is not what you are visiting Joensuu!|NEGATIVES - the are only two negatives. The first was that the bathroom was VERY small and in need of updating. Yes, I am from the States but I visit Europe two to four times per year so I am not unaccustomed to European style hotel rooms/bathrooms. The other was that on each morning, there was no service to straighten up the rooms. Fortunately we were able to grab towels and toilet paper from the cart and it wasn't the worst problem to have but still surprising.|POSITIVES - there are LOTS of these:|- In the weeks running up to our visit, I had quite a few questions that I couldn't find answers to online. Each time I emailed the hotel, they responded VERY promptly with the information I needed|- The location is excellent, right on the town's main square and easy walking distance to an array of restaurants, shopping and ten minutes from the train station. And for those going to the World Cup in Kontiolahti, the motor coach shuttle to the arena picks up and drops off in the main square, next to the hotel.|- The staff was professionally friendly and helpful in all aspects - front desk, breakfast, cleaning crew|- The breakfast buffet was delicious and well-stocked. Be VERY aware of the closing time as they start breaking down the buffet AT closing time!|- The beds were VERY comfortable (a major plus as my wife and I both have dodgy backs)||Bottom line, if/when we return to Kontiolahti, we'll be...

First of all, I am not a big fan of Sokos-hotels, so I struggle with my bias towards the hotels in domestic travel. The rooms rarely surprise you since they are often built for a typical business traveler in Finland. However, Sokos Hotel Vaakuna in Joensuu blew me off the water in the most positive way. ||||Personalised, extremely casual and friendly service, typical for Eastern Finland. Smooth logistics and a fabullous breakfast with plenty of products from local companies and producers. Fabullous experience. ||||The hotel is centrally located, wifi was good, room (366) was clean, wifi worked well and my room was quiet. ||||But the breakfast was something special. 5-kerroksen lyhyt välikäytävä haisi todella pahalta ainakin 21-23.7.2025 välisen ajan, kun menin huoneeseen 515. Ilmeisesti välikäytävän haju tuli siitä kun Joensuussa oli festarit aiempana viikonloppuna ja kokolattiamatto oli imenyt hotellivieraiden hajut itseensä. Huoneen 515 viemäri piti outoa kurnutusta ja jollei kurnuttanut kylpyhuoneessa oli viemärin haju, joka tuli myös huoneeseen. Huonoin aamiainen jonka olen syönyt yhdessäkään sokos hotellissa. Pekonit raakoja , tomaatit ylikypsiä tai raakoja kunnollisia sai etsimällä etsiä, mehuautomaatista tuli appelsiini mehun kohdalta pelkkää vettä, vesimeloonit loppu jo klo 7.30. Ilmeisesti aamiaisen hoitaneella yksin liikaa työtehtäviä. Aamiaistilan kalusteet kaipaavat uusimista, pitää istua varovasti ettei saa tikkua persuksiin tai repäise housuja. Siivoaja hoiti hienosti oman osuuden loppuun saakka, kiitos hänelle. Kun varasimme huoneen emme tienneet että hotellissa on menossa samaan aikaa kattoremontti ja saunatilojen poreamme ei ole hotellivieraiden käytössä, luimme sen hotellin sivuilta ennen saapumista. Pyysimme huonetta ylimmästä kerroksesta ja aamuauringon puolelta, saimme huoneen joka oli ylimmässä kerroksessa ja kattotyömiehet työskentelivät lähes ikkunan vieressä ja näköala oli roskapöntöille jos katsoi alas päin ikkunasta. Ilmeisesti meillä oli hotellin huonoin huone. TV sammuili illan aikana itsekseen useita kertoja, sen sai toimimaan kun ei tehnyt mitään vain odotti n 1min , kuva tuli takaisin. Joten urheilun katsomine oli hieman haastavaa, kun tilanteet menee niin nopeasti. Näin ollen eipä jäänyt tästä lomasta hyvä kuva hotellista, muuten loma oli kyllä aivan onnistunut.
