The reception is unhelpful, and although we asked about the parking conditions at the hotel, the lady at the reception desk didn't warn us about the dangers of car theft, but simply informed us that parking in front of the hotel is free until 9:00 a.m., while parking at the hotel costs €24.
The next morning, we found the car broken into, and our main luggage and valuables (laptop, smartphone) had been stolen.
When we asked to contact the police, the reception team (different people than the previous evening) initially responded very hesitantly (I have to speak to my manager first), then gave us the address of a police station that had been closed for three years.
After reporting the burglary to the police, we contacted the reception again; the colleague (manager?) who had been at the reception that morning was still there.
We pointed out again that we were very disappointed that we had not been made aware of the large number of car break-ins in Lyon and that several passers-by had confirmed to us that this happens very often in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. The statement that this has only happened 1 or 2 times in the last 3 years is very doubtful, but even if this is the case, 2 car break-ins are too many not warn your guests.
This time again, as in the morning, the reception desk showed no empathy or even a word of regret, unlike innocent passersby on the street did.
We subsequently researched the situation and found that there have been between 9,300 and 9,700 car break-ins in Lyon in recent years.
I think the reception staff are also aware of this critical situation, and I find it very regrettable that guests are not informed of the very high risk to park cars on the street close...
Read moreAmazing team at reception and restaurants. I had dinner twice at the restaurant, breakfast and a few drinks. Nothing to remark there. It would be better to have a proper welcome drink like other hotels and chose a beer or a soft at the bar and not a bottle of the water in the rooms. It lacks attention to the detail to ALL guests. Housekeeping team was an absolute disaster. After my first night, I left the hotel around 1pm and left the sign "freshen me up mama" for the room to be cleaned. When I arrived circa 8pm the room has not been cleaned and have been told that their misunderstood the sign for the do not disturb because they saw the paper. Apparently their capacity to read signs isn't the best. The last day I have paid for a late check-out and put the do not disturb sign in the room because we want to sleep a bit late and chill in the room. Not once, but twice, we were awake by the housekeeping team. First time, a man to refill our fridge with water what I guess he was only supposed to do it after the check-out because water being refilled never happened during my stay. According to him "I saw the do not disturb but just wanted to give you water". No comments!!! 30min after another lady of the housekeeping team came in and said that saw the sign but thought that the room was empty. On top of it, there were some constructions happening at that time, I guess on the rooftop of the hotel. If ain't the case my apologies. But if it's in the rooftop and we heard very clearly because we are in the 6th floor, it would have been nice to be...
Read moreStayed here for 4 nights for a city break in Lyon and had a very good stay here at Mama Shelter. Friendly and welcoming staff that always made an effort to say hello and offer their assistance throughout the duration of our stay, the guest experience here is very good. The interior is a modern alternative style if a little strange in some way, for example our room decor was a little 'unfinished' showing bare concrete on the walls and ceilings. Certainly different! Rooms were cleaned daily to a good standard and each room has an apple TV with films and photo booth apps on - great for a relaxed night in or just an early night after long days of exploring as we had.
The only thing that stops me from giving Mama 5 stars is the location. It is a little out of town and in a slightly undesirable area of Lyon. Throughout our trip we chose to walk most places (Lyon is very much so a walkable city) but the first 30 minutes of us day was spent getting into town from Mama (via one of Lyons many excellent cafes of course). If we were to stay in Lyon again, we'd have preferred to be a little closer to the action!
Overall a very good experience and we loved our...
