HRH — Hotel in Hanau

In early October 2012, I returned to the Hotel Residence in Hanau/Main, Germany, where I had stayed previously, because of its location, age, size and interior. I consider it as a “hotel garni”, i.e. a “bed-and breakfast hotel”. It has, I believe about 40 rooms. It offers both underground and outside parking, and seems to cater primarily to business travelers.||The hotel also offers 12 or so well-equipped apartments ||||As I had been accustomed to from previous stays, my reservation was in order and check-in simple and very quick. The receptionist was friendly and helpful.||||My room was very clean with Scandinavian-style furniture, including a comfortable bed, good-size wardrobe and a functional desk. The bathroom has a shower stall and was well-lit. Hot water was available virtually instantaneously and at good pressure. As is typical of many smaller European hotels, toiletries are very limited in size and variety. Textile face clothes are rarely offered. This is why I carry my own and/or use paper clothes for one-time use. They are very functional. I also carry extra soap and lotions. For travelers staying at the Residence not familiar with European hotel conditions, but needing toiletries, there is a very good and well-priced “dm-drogerie markt” (drug store) within easy walking distance from the Residence, just up the street. There also is a good selection of restaurants within easy walking distance in the hotel’s vicinity, and even a hospital. Few blocks from the hotel, there is an excellent farmers’ market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This is very convenient for the Residence’s apartment guests.||||My room also offers Internet connection. Conference/seminar rooms have Wi-Lan internet connections.||||The only criticism I had is that, typically, smaller German hotels, including the Residence, do not usually turn-on the heat in early October, when it can be quite cool, as I experienced.||||The hotel’s breakfast buffet, while not large, contains a good selection of good-quality breakfast items, including smoked fish, which I like.||||My room rate was reasonable and my room-statement accurate. The hotel room (suite) was absolutely huge and spotlessly clean, also had large windows that can be opened wide (compared to a lot of other hotels in Germany) so the room is not too hot or stuffy. The rooms are a little soulless but beds comfortable and loads of space. Buffet breakfast included, which was also good (continental breakfast). Car parking costed an extra 5 Euros. ||In terms of location, it is within easy walking distance to the town centre (shops, bars and the small but quaint old town), however the hotel's neighbourhood area is slightly dodgy: lapdance clubs, gambling dens, blue movie theatres and a lot of dodgy looking youths hanging out at bus shelters at night. Also did not spot a lot of restaurants in town centre (unless you're into greasy pizzas or doner kebabs) but some nice restaurants in the old town area. Apart from the old town, the rest of Hanau reminded me more of dodgy parts of Birmingham than of a "fairy tale town", so not as enchanting as one would expect from a town that advertises itself as the "Brothers Grimm town", although much of this is due to many of Hanau's old buildings having been destroyed in the Second World War. ||If you are looking to follow in the footsteps of the Grimm brothers, you will find a statue of the brothers at the market square and a small boulder with a plaque near the bus station indicating the approximate location of Grimms' birth place. Zu diesen "Residence-Hotel" gibt es viel gutes aber auch schlechtes zu sagen. Wir hatten eine der Suiten für 195€ pro Nacht reserviert. Laut Prospekt sollten wir hohem Komfort genießen. Das was wir hatten ist nicht den Namen Wert. Natürlich gab es 2 getrennten Bereiche. Aber im Schlafbereich gab es kein Fernseher. Die Karten auf den wir die TV-Programme finden sollten, war komplett falsch. ZDF haben wir über 300 Programme weiter als gekennzeichnet gefunden. Das Bad war winzig klein. die Einrichtung war aus den 70er.... Der Frühstücksbereich war akzeptabel auch wenn er schon veraltet war. Überall war es sehr sauber. Die Tiefgarage mit 12€/Nacht fanden wir überteuert. Aber wir konnten das Auto abstellen und unseren Aufenthalt genießen. So Dachten wir es, bis wir uns ein Gläschen Wein an der Hotelbar gönnen wollten. Die Getränke-Karte war ansprechend. Leider keiner der 3 Herren, die uns am späten Nachmittag und dann gegen 232:00 Uhr bedient haben konnten uns irgend einer der Weine einschenken weil sie einfach nicht vorhanden waren. Egal was wir bestellen wollten war nicht vorhanden. Also haben wir uns auf den ein oder anderen Kompromiss eingelassen. Zwischen den 3 Herren ist nur einer richtig daran interessiert gewesen unsere Zeit an der Bar angenehm zu gestallten. Herr Übergao hieß er. Den mussten wir hier mit seiner Genehmigung erwähnen. der 2. war bis ca. 22:45 im Dienst, konnte nicht mal eine Flasche Sekt aufmachen, wusste nicht was ein Weißweinglas war, etc. etc. Er hat gebeichtet, das er in der Ausbildung war... Der letzte hatte anscheinend Nachtdienst. der wusste nicht mal wo die Getränke waren, welche Weine er in der Hand hielt (er hätte es nur lesen müssen) etc. etc. Als meine Frau irgendwann ziemlich genervt war und fragt ob das Personal überhaupt Ahnung hatten von was sie tun, gab es vom Nachtdienst-Mitarbeiter nur die Frage ob wir bereits in der Früh an der Bar sind.... Gemeint war natürlich, die Gäste nerven nur weil sie ein wenig zu viel getrunken haben statt sich zu fragen was er falsch macht. Das ganze hat natürlich alles Positive im Schatten gestellt. Dass die Geschäftsleitung etwas in der Bildung von Personal in Richtung Kundenbetreuung und Getränke ist ja ein Muss.
