My husband and I decided on impulse to attend a concert in the Cathedral of St Blasien one Saturday night and wanted to find somewhere to stay locally as it was just too far to drive home comfortably. We chose this hotel because it was just over the square from the Cathedral and it looked inviting and comfortable.||||Despite short notice of our booking, we were immediately made to feel welcome, and our room was ready for us. We were personally shown to our room by a member of staff, who gave us all the necessary information about breakfast times the next morning, which door and key would let us come and go as we pleased when the café and restaurant were closed, and the opening hours of the restaurant should we care to take dinner there that evening. It was a lovely change from being given a key and directions by an impersonal front desk.||||Our room was traditionally but well furnished with a good sized wardrobe, comfortable large bed, a state of the art TV and a view overlooking the Cathedral. The bathroom was compact but everything worked a treat with plenty of hot water and a good shower. There were plenty of towels and soap and shampoo was provided.||||We decided to have dinner in the restaurant before the concert. The decor was bright and clean, and the menu varied and fairly priced. Our orders were taken promptly and our requests for boiled potatoes instead of chipped potatoes and for a main course only from a 3 course dinner were accepted very positively. The food was served by the chef himself (actually the hotel owner Mr Brodmann) and it was hot, fresh and very tasty. We succumbed to the inevitable Black Forest Gateau which was generous in its kirsch and cherries! ||||We spent a good and comfortable night, and enjoyed our buffet breakfast, characterised by different varieties of local breads, cold cuts, freshly-boiled eggs and fruit. ||||Checkout was painless, and we felt that we had had excellent value for money, and a weekend to remember ......... and they didn't hold it against us when we got home and found that we hadn't returned the room key by mistake. We hope very much to return, and not make the same mistake twice!||||The hotel is well placed for exploring the southern Black Forest, Titisee, the nearby thermal Radon Baths and Switzerland, including Schaffhausern's Rhinefalls and Basel. And this locality is not only a walker's paradise, but also good for you, being one of the many areas recommended for the healthy...
Read moreI never felt more unwelcome as in this hotel. Try to imagine that you just walked over 25km in the pouring rain. You're soaked, cold, ... but very happy to reached your hotel. Then the cold truth, the owner has a clear message: you're 1,5 hour too early for checkin, come back later. ||What?!? Seriously? We were back on the street. In the rain. Don't get me wrong. I understand that a room is not ready yet. I work for over 15 years as a journalist in the hospitality industry, so I think I can say I know something about hospitality. I just can't understand any hotel owner can react like this. I wouldn't treat a dog like this. There was a restaurant... why didn't he see the opportunity to ask if we wanted to wait inside? Order something to eat or drink? To be honest I just was speechless by his reaction. We had to go to another hotel to find some shelter and eat something. ||But I have to be honest there was also young lady who was very friendly. She helped us later getting some answers we needed. She does understand what it takes to work in tourism and make people feel welcome. ||The rooms were ok and clean. They can use a makeover, but I think old-fashioned can also have...
Read moreStayed two nights at this hotel during a hiking trip in the area. Very nicely situated hotel just across the square from the beautiful St Blasien Dom. Older hotel, but reasonably well maintained. No elevator.||||I found the bed very uncomfortable -- the mattress too hard -- for me it felt like a thin piece of foam on top of cardboard. However, my traveling companion didn't have a problem with it, and I acknowledge that as I get older I can't tolerate hard mattresses.||||We did eat dinner at the hotel restaurant and felt it was fine, as was the breakfast.||||For me, the mattress was uncomfortable enough that I wouldn't return here, but it may well be fine for...
