On the positive side, the Rieslinghof has very attractive spacious rooms. The public areas are stylish and bright. There is a well-stocked refrigerator in the lobby with wine from the region (guests are asked to record their purchases on a notepad, using the 'honour system'). Wachenheim itself is charming and you can go for lovely walks through the surrounding vineyards. But the Rieslinghof's location at the intersection of two stoplight streets means there's quite a bit of traffic noise into the evening and early in the morning. Perhaps the rooms are quiet in the winter when the windows are closed and there's less agricultural activity, but in July we had trouble sleeping: we heard the first trucks at 4 am. Service is also problematic. For example, we couldn't turn on the TV in our room, but when we asked for help, the person on duty just shrugged and said she had no idea what to do. The Tour de France was at a dramatic stage, and since the TV was useless, we tried to view the race on an iPad. But the wifi in the Rieslinghof is so weak that video can't be accessed. I asked the person on duty about the wifi issue and was told that poor internet reception is a problem throughout the town of Wachenheim. Hmmm. The breakfast buffet of cold foods - local sausages, cheese, rolls and cereal -was attractively presented, but again the service was disappointing. Dirty dishes sat on an adjacent table throughout our meal, waiting to be cleared away. Smoked salmon had apparently been on offer, but the serving plate had not been replenished. No eggs or other hot foods were offered to us (although an empty egg cup on the neighbouring table suggested that a previous guest had enjoyed a boiled egg). I'm sorry to write such a negative review since this place has great potential, but given the problems I've just described, we would never...
Read moreWe stayed here in September 2010 while we were visiting family in Deidesheim and Neustadt. This hotel was fantastic. It was really clean, nicely decorated, comfortable and must have been recently renovated. We were (I think) the only guests at least one of the nights, so it's very, very quiet (maybe a dozen rooms total? Wachenheim was also really quiet with not many people around, but I don't know if that differs depending on the time of the year). Each room had access to a balcony (which weren't separate, but all connected) where we had a nice time enjoying the weather and our bottle of complementary wine. While someone was not at the desk the entire time, the woman who checked us in and out and served our breakfast was wonderful. Ironically, we didn't speak much since she knew only German and us only a little bit of German, so some knowledge of the language is necessary. A place was set specifically for us at breakfast, which was a large buffet and very fresh. We will definitely stay here again on...
