In case you look to book your stay in an affordable hotel during high season in Patmos Island Effie Hotel might seem like an attractive option, but unfortunately this was not the case. For the money we paid we were expecting much more. It failed to meet our expectations in almost all levels. ||||1) Location||Patmos is a small island. Hotel was close to the port and had a small parking lot which most of the times was occupied, but thankfully the public parking lot was also close. ||||2) The room||A very simple room, badly maintained with an extremely noisy refrigerator and lack of power sockets (no schuko plug at all except of the one behind the fridge). The shower was leaking and every day we were taking a bath we had to jump over a "water pool" to get out of the bathroom. The fridge was so noisy that we had to turn it off each night before going to sleep. We asked the lobby to check this issue. They told us that they would send someone to check it. No one ever came. The A/C external unit sitting on the ground of the balcony was blowing hot air so it was impossible to seat outside. Bed mattress quality was average to poor. Even if we asked for a double bed, we had to sleep on two single beds being put next to each other. Free WiFi is a plus.||||3) Breakfast||Very average breakfast missing basic things like honey (!) and proper bread slices. Specifically with regards to the bread, one of the hotel's employees was filling up the empty bread tray picking some low quality burger buns with bare hands. Hygiene please?!?! The breakfast included black coffee, tea, hot chocolate, milk, a couple of juices (not fresh), small packs of jams, small packs of butter, slices cheese, slices of ham, boiled eggs, Greek yogurt, a couple of cereals, a couple of fruits and some cake. One morning I tried the tea and right after I was served with hot water in a cup, I could see some floating black particles in the cup!! I didn't drink the tea. Boiled eggs were so frozen that it was really hard to consume. I am an egg lover but these eggs were really hard to eat. ||||4) Cleanliness||Would I consider this hotel as clean in general? Hm... not really. Except of the incident with the burger bun, we had to face another incident of hygiene threat. One afternoon that we got back to the room after enjoying the day at the sea we realized that the cleaning lady had put the small bathroom rug (dirty or not I don't care) hanging on the rope we use to hang our swimming suits to dry. We reported this ASAP to the lobby and fortunately the cleaning lady didn't do the same mistake 2nd time, at least in our room...||||5) Personnel||Not pleased with the overall attitude of the employees. The basic hi/bye attitude without any sign of true and warm hospitality. One thing that annoyed me was during the check-out we had to ask to get the receipt. Apparently the lady was trying to tax evade. ||||Final thoughts:||Yes, it's a budget hotel and during high season it's not easy to find alternatives, but if this hotel was the only option left, I would have better...
Read moreIt's about 8 minutes away from the port on foot but be prepared to walk uphill for a few metres once you turn left from the main road. It has two two- storey buildings and no elevator (lift). The rooms on the second floor have tiny balconies and a relatively good view depending on the room (some sea bits and mostly rooftops of other houses or buildings). The room I stayed in on the second floor had a tiny bathroom. The inside breakfast area was too small and the tables and chairs were crammed but there was ample space outside next to the garden with plenty of chairs and tables. Also the breakfast served was rather poor without many options. Just the basics. Be prepared to walk up sets of stairs to go to your room or the reception. Friendly...
