A good example of how other guests can ruin a decent place to stay. Rooms were big by guesthouse standards and had luggage racks but had only one functioning power outlet. Medium speed WiFi. Window in room #2 did not fully close so the cold wind could blow inside. Bed and linens were nice, no complaints. Upon arrival kitchen was not clean and was being used, kitchen was not cleaned during our stay and remained quite dirty, unwashed dishes in sink, uneaten food in cooking pots and food left out on counters. A large group of guests occupied kitchen and dining area and cooked dinner from 10pm to past 1 am, (quiet time was stated on email confirmation to be 10pm) playing games, laughing and being very disrespectful. They left the kitchen totally uncleaned and unusable in the morning for other guests. They left cooking pans with noodles in them on the stove among other things, the place was a total mess. They also (I assume) took my zipped and self contained bad of cold food out of the refrigerator and left it on the kitchen counter that night so when I went to gather my food in the morning it had been out all night; milk, cheese, lunch meats, yoghurts...nice. Many places we have stayed in Iceland that are "Guesthouses" are slightly glorified hostels that differ only by having private rooms. You will find similar hostel clientele and hostel behavior so take that into account. Guesthouses are very often unattended and have no reception so there is no monitoring of facilities other than the cleaning of rooms, bathrooms and kitchens once daily after checkouts, troublesome guests are left to be as out of control as they care to be. I realize that this was the case for me on this one night but it was pretty bad. It made the stay very unpleasant and use of the kitchen impossible for me and...
Read moreI booked on a hotel booking service, just a few hours before arrival. It was winter rates, but still, for $50, I expected the worst. I was pleasantly surprised. |I did panic when Google maps didn't recognize the address, either directly from the booking site or when I pasted the address in. But when I used the map from the Guesthouse's web site it brought me right tou it. |Check in is a bit sketchy. It was after dark and the office was accessed with a ringer and voice box. Odd. A male choice said he'd be right with us then in 10 seconds a voice in the next building said to come on over. Fortunately we'd been advised our room would be in the annex, otherwise we'd have been freaked out! We met him at the front door to the annex and from there all was uphill! Our room is smallish but quite adequate. Wall mount TV, small round table and 2 chairs, night stands with goose neck lamps. The host showed us around, explained everything, assured we were ok, then left. |What's to like, besides the price?:|-Community kitchen, well stocked|Refrigerator w/ separate marked shelf for each guest|-Two bathrooms, with showers, are very compact but very clean, with modern European fixtures. Though they're nice bathrooms, one more would be ideal. |- Heat in bedroom works super well|Blackout drapes in bedroom.|- Very quiet! I didn't hear a peep from the whole guesthouse all night, and it was booked full!|If you are ok with sharing a bathroom and if you live love a bargain, this...
Read moreAfter reading the reviews here I had to write. I stayed here one night...kitchen was filthy the entire time I was there, I realize this was caused by guests who did not clean up but it remained this way the entire day, evening and the next morning. Other guests were cooking dinner from past 10pm to after 1am, in addition they were in the common area being as loud as humanly possible. They left uneaten food in the kitchen on the stove, in cooking pots, on the dining table, everywhere.|I also want to stress that what has been said in other reviews about breakfast being provided or served is simply not true. There is no breakfast offered, served or provided, if you read that in a review below, it is either an error or made up. Any review that mentions being greeted by the owner or manager and being shown around is not true. There is no food left in the kitchen for breakfast like cereal, coffee, milk, pastries or otherwise, again, this is untrue. The Hofn Guesthouse does not have an attended reception. Keys are left in lockboxes, there is no greeting or manager or staff on site. I don't know where these reviews come from but they are...
