Although this hotel is 45km from Reykjavik (and even further beyond to the myriad wonders of Iceland's landscape) it is just within earshot of the Keflavik Airport, on what appears to be an old army base. This means we can make it to our early morning flight without too much fuss or effort. However, it's not particularly easy to find, being among a large collection of rather similar buildings; there is some roadside signage, though - it's worth having a willing copilot to look out for "Eldey Airport Hotel" signs.
When we finally arrived it was a welcoming hotel, with plenty of parking and very friendly staff.
The rooms are spacious; the ones we occupied on the first floor (200+) had en-suite bathrooms - with a rather ingenious and somewhat unintuitive way to switch to the shower: pull down the centre 'nozzle' of the bath tap - and very comfortable beds.
Breakfast was a buffet with plenty of delicious hot (sausages, beans, eggs and toast) and cold (cereal, yogurt and melon) treats and good coffee to start the day, and we couldn't have wanted for more as a "home base" for our adventures.
There's a small gym, a sauna and an outdoor hot tub, and bathrobes to wear in between.
If I have any minor gripes, it would be that the airport can get a little loud depending on the wind direction and the position of the room - one of the sides of the hotel faces alongside the runway - and the leakage of light from the top of the curtains meant that the long summer nights kept me company until late. But there are earplugs and eye masks for that - small matters indeed.
We have had a great stay here, and would definitely...
Read moreA sign in the bathroom shames the customer in an 'environment-friendly' behaviour (towel policy) all while promoting individual transport (taxi companies they seem to have deals with). We explicitely asked for the bus schedule and were told that there wasn't any in the area (spoiler: 15min walk to the next stop, taking you to the airport for 3,50€ and Reykavik) Room: spacious but heated to 30 degrees in summer ? and with covers that the icelandic sheep would willingly exchange their wool for in the arctic winter. Long story short, I've never woken up so many times in one night sweating in my entire life. I'm not finished with the environment btw: there is a body shampoo spender BUT ours was empty. Instead there were little plastic bottles for shampoo with a container to content weight ratio of about 1:1. Location: Next to the airport BUT not to a part that is accessible by foot. Payment: when asked to change its machine to LOCAL currency (isk which can be advantageous for tourists) the guy at the reception only responded 'we charge in euros'. Thanks for nothing. If you can, stay at the start hostel. Better value, better price,...
Read moreIt is not too much these days to expect a nightstand by each side of the bed, with a light and a place to plug in your devices, but they were nowhere to be found. We had to plug our phones in across the room and get out of bed to turn the lights on or off. The TV had a very small screen and no instructions. We could not figure out how to use it and gave up. The first time we stayed there we contacted them before we arrived and asked if we could check in early. They said OK, but it would cost an extra 40 euros. We agreed, although it was annoying as many other hotels, if the room is available, let you do it for free. So they added 40 euros to the bill, but when we arrived they charged us an extra 40 euros. If I had not noticed, we (and our friends who were also overcharged) would have not gotten a refund, which I had to request. We stayed there again, and I paid ahead of time through booking.com. But when we got there they charged us again, and we did not notice until looking at the credit card bill a month later. Again they did a refund, but we should have not had to check. Stay...
