Nokha House — Hotel in Jaipur Municipal Corporation

Out for an evening meal, being on an organised tour, I didn’t experience the guest house aspect of this establishment but from what I saw, I would not hesitate to try it||||Scrupulously clean, Nokha House is an oasis of calm in a manic world. Once inside, the hubbub of traffic and the comings and going of the fire station across the road, were so muted as to be irrelevant. Through the gallery of old photographs, we met the builder of the house, Major Thakur Panny Singh||||Our host, the son of the house, a descendant of the Major, welcomed the 27 of us to his home with a small ceremony, in which he painted a red spot on our foreheads, to which he ‘glued’ three grains of rice.||||This young man’s English is impeccable, his humour droll. He explained the dishes we would be eating. We laughed when he told us that as the only non-vegetarian in the family, to him had fallen the task of cooking the chicken that evening. There was a dish of cooked vegetables. He apologised that he would not be eating that dish himself because of the times he’d been forced to eat vegetables when he was a child. It turned out that both dishes were excellent, as was the remainder of the food.||||The wafer-thin poppadoms had been made on the family farm that afternoon, the rest of the food having been cooked in the family kitchen.||||It should have been impossible to please so may people but, like Goldilocks porridge, the food was neither ‘too spicy’ nor ‘not spicy enough’ but ‘just right’.||||Our host’s mother put in a brief appearance and It was easy to see from whom he had received his graciousness and his sense of humour.||||I don’t hesitate to recommend the quality of the Nokha House experience.||||Nokha House is 1.5 km from the Jaipur railway station, 2 km from the city bus stand and 13 km...
