Read moreOn a recent trip to Trivandrum, we decided to stay at the KTDC Mascot Hotel, purely for old times sake. We used to stay here during our childhood and I was surprised to see that the hotel still retained it's old style ambience specially in its Heritage section. Steeped in history, this hotel is more than a century old and has its origins in the British era when it was built to accomodate soldiers during World War 1. The hotel is clean and comfortable but hardly deserving of its 5 star status. The reception is housed in a high ceilinged hall and has an old world charm that is quite welcoming. However, the actual counter consists of two tables hastily pulled together manned by receptionists who have a homely air about them and lack the professionalism in dress and manner that you see in hotels of the same ilk. This does not mean that their work was shoddy. They were quite efficient and friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. This was true of all the staff. The room allotted to us was musty and dim with dull lighting and we were not happy. On request, we were upgraded to a room in the new block which met our expectations. It was large and well lit and had a nice view of the swimming pool. We had the breakfast buffet a couple of times and also ordered room service on occasion. I am sorry to say the food was a huge disappointment. We had to make do with hard idlis, limp appams and dosas, tasteless stews and curries. Even the kozhukattai which is normally soft and filled with the goodness of fresh coconut was hard and filled with some hardly there dessicated coconut. The cutlets had more potatoes than meat and were bland. The sandwiches had more raw vegetables than chicken or cheese. The chef seemed to have a predilection for carrots. You could find them in every dish that was served, without fail. The only item which sort of perked the tastebuds was the meen pollichathu, which was rather nice. The KTDC Mascot Hotel scores high on location, great staff, it's old world charm and clean, comfortable rooms. The food is definitely not recommended. But then you always have Swiggy as backup so...
