English Review: Pankayam – A Celebration of Authentic Kerala Cuisine

📍 Just after the underpass, Bakery Flyover, Nandavanam, Palayam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala 695003

If you want to experience Kerala’s traditional flavours in their most honest and delicious form, head to Pankayam. Tucked just off the underpass near Bakery Flyover, this restaurant is easy to find and absolutely worth the visit.

What We Tried We ordered a flavour-packed spread, and each dish delivered on taste and authenticity:

Prawns Ghee Roast – Rich, sweet, and aromatic with the perfect hit of ghee and spices. Dint expect to be sweet.

Fried Fish & Masala Fish Steamed in Banana Leaf – Fresh, flaky, and loaded with Kerala-style masala. The banana leaf gave it that earthy aroma that elevated the dish.

Chicken Fry – Crisp on the outside, juicy inside, with bold, peppery flavour. Debatable, might like or might not. I dint like it.

Appam, Parotha, Chapati & Fried Rice – Each of these sides was fresh and soft, making the perfect base for soaking up all those delicious gravies.

By-the-way they only service fried rice and other chinese rice and noodles, there is not steam rice.

Ambience & Service The atmosphere is simple, clean, and charming, with a rustic Kerala touch. The staff was friendly, helpful, and gave us great suggestions on what to try. The service was prompt even though the place was buzzing.

Extras That Matter Vegetarian Options: Yes, plenty on the menu. Parking: Limited roadside parking — arrive early or use local transport if possible. Kid-Friendly: Absolutely. Wheelchair Access: Entry is street-level and manageable. Pricing: Reasonable for the quality and portions served.

Verdict Pankayam is a must-visit for lovers of Kerala food. The dishes are bold, traditional, and made with care, it feels like eating at someone’s home in the best way possible. If you're in or around Palayam, don't miss this unique dining.

ഞങ്ങൾ ട്രൈ ചെയ്ത വിഭവങ്ങൾ: കൊഞ്ച് നെയ്‌രോസ്റ്റ് – നെയ്യിന്റെയും മസാലയുടെയും പുത്തൻ സുഗന്ധവും ഒപ്പം കുരുമുളക് ഉണക്കമുളക് ചേരുവകളുടെ കട്ട രുചിയും ചേർന്ന അത്യുത്തമമായൊരു വിഭവം.

ഫിഷ് ഫ്രൈയും വാഴയിലയിൽ വേവിച്ച മീൻ മസാലയും – ചേരുവകളും വാഴയിലയുടെ ഭാവവും ചേർന്ന് നല്ലൊരു അസ്സൽ ഫിഷ് ഡിഷ്.

ചിക്കൻ ഫ്രൈ – പുറത്തേക്ക് ക്രിസ്പിയും ഉള്ളിലേക്ക് ജ്യൂസിയുമായ പെപ്പറി ചിക്കൻ.

അപ്പം, പരോട്ട, ചപ്പാത്തി, ചോറ് – എല്ലാ സൈഡുകളും താഴ്വൻനോരു പോലെ ഫ്രഷും, നല്ല പാചകമേയും.

അന്തരീക്ഷവും സേവനവും നാടൻ ശൈലിയിലുള്ള ഹൃദയസ്പർശിയായ അന്തരീക്ഷം, വൃത്തിയുള്ള മേശകൾ, ഒപ്പം സൗഹൃദപരമായ സ്റ്റാഫ് — അവർ ഭക്ഷണ ശുപാർശകളും ചെയ്തു. സേവനം വേഗത്തിലായിരുന്നു എങ്കിലും, സ്ഥലം തിരക്കിലായിരുന്നു.

വില: ഗുണമേന്മയ്ക്കനുസരിച്ച് ന്യായമായ നിരക്ക്.

I don’t often leave negative reviews, but my experience at this establishment was so thoroughly disappointing that I feel compelled to share it. From the moment we walked in, it was clear that service and hospitality were not a priority here. We were seated promptly, but then left completely unattended for nearly 15 minutes. No menus, no water, not even a simple acknowledgment from any of the staff. Meanwhile, several employees appeared far more engaged in casual conversations with each other than in attending to the needs of paying customers.

When we finally did manage to get someone’s attention, the service remained slow and disorganized. There was a general sense of indifference that permeated the entire front-of-house operation — no warmth, no attentiveness, no sense of urgency. It felt as though we were inconveniencing them by simply being there.

Unfortunately, the food did nothing to redeem the experience. The dishes we ordered arrived lacking in both flavor and presentation. Everything tasted bland and uninspired, as though minimal effort had gone into preparation. For the price point, we expected far more in terms of quality, creativity, and execution. It was disappointing to pay premium prices for food that felt like an afterthought.

We politely voiced some of our concerns during the meal, hoping for at least a courteous response or some effort at resolution, but were instead met with a dismissive attitude. There was no genuine apology, no attempt to make things right — just more indifference.

Overall, this visit was a frustrating and underwhelming experience from start to finish. Both the kitchen and service staff appear to be lacking leadership, training, and most importantly, a basic commitment to customer satisfaction. Dining out should feel welcoming and enjoyable — this felt like the opposite.

There are far too many restaurants that take pride in what they do to waste time or money here. I won’t be returning, and I would strongly advise others to look elsewhere if they’re hoping for even a passable dining experience.

We will absolutely never return to this place, nor would we ever recommend it to our friends or family. The experience was so poor that even giving it one star feels...

This is my first review for a hotel. I have never had such a BAD EXPERIENCE from any hotels.

After getting out of the hospital after my wife's check-up, we were hungry as it was late. While looking for a good hotel, we saw in front of us was "PANKAYAM" A good ambience was seen in front and there was a good car parking area

For the first 15 minutes no one even came to our side to take orders.Then when I looked at the walls and menu it was highlighted all over that "Fish Grilled Mandi " was a must try item. So i ordered a half mandi for me and my wife.

After waiting for another 25 minutes, the item arrived🥲 There was only enough rice in it for a small child to eat. Maximum a 5 or 6 tbs for both. Can't fault,the rice was good😋

So next started eating fish. The outside is soft with the spice and the skin and the inside is like a raw meat taken from the fridge. I called them and showed them this. His explanation was cool,the taste is only enhanced by eating this low cooked fish with this manti 😂At first I thought it might be right, lets RETRY

The meat was not moving at all, it was sticking.Since it was almost 3 pm and we were very hungry so we thought we can eat some rice without going down there. We called them and asked them to give us extra rice, we will pay. They said that they dont provide extra rice for mandi instead they can provide us with normal rice (ucha oonu rice)

we got up from there and went straight to the reception and report the issue to the manager.The manager said that I am not responsible for this If you have any problem call the number and report. So we called the mentioned 2 mobile numbers. One was switched off and another one not picking up. So after eating a handful of rice and paying 630rupees, we left there
